Strategy to obtain US Amex

Which plan are you on? Do you have a lot of plats? The credit's only $10 per month, right?

I'm on the legacy $3/month. I only have 2 plats now including 1 biz that gives $10/m. Most of these credits were from 2020 when Amex was giving $20/$10 wireless credits on some cards for a whole year. They also gave a free $100 credit to use on Bestbuy which I used to buy Ebay gift card and bought even more topup there lol Thankfully I could use those $30 paypal credits on my hosting or I would have another 5 years on this T-mobile sim.

Question on adding authorised users / supp cards to one’s account.

How do you activate the card? They ask for SSN when trying to activate the card.

Do we have to call them or do I activate the card by saying that I’m activating it for myself?

I called them myself and said the supp holder had no SSN then gave the passport number. I believe live chat from your account might work as well now. Once supp card holder got an account, he or she can use her own live chat to activate.

I'm not quite sure but I think I got them to create an account as well. Back at those days, each supp card needed its own account even when they were in the same name but these days one account can handle multiple supp cards.

Also waiting to hear some updated info on this.

Thanks, I did a bit of research and found people who chatted to confirm the AU’s card, so I tried that too and it worked.

Was able to add foreign passport to confirm AU card via live chat. Live chat person said can use the confirm card details to create their own account, I haven’t gotten round to that yet but will try soon and report back.

Update - Used Talkatone for getting the US number.

Card arrived today. Yay. Discovered that Talkatone can recieve 2FA however it won't let me reply 'YES' to Amex so I'm not able to subscribe to Text Alerts but seemingly it will work.

I think you need to use the service every 30 days to stop the number expiring (although unsure if this is the case if you have credit on there) so I've set a reminder every 4 weeks to text myself

Hi all, still pretty new in my US CC journey.
I was able to open a HSBC Premier US bank account.
Is there a US$50 account keeping fee for premier customers too?
If so, I understand if I transfer US$5000 into the account every month then there is no fee. How are people with HSBC managing this to avoid account keeping fee?

Most people have a Aus HSBC Premier account and meet the fee free conditions here. Then they request to open up a US premier account on the basis of their australian account and it's fee free I believe.

oh right. I do have a HSBC AU Premier but my US account has its own unique login id. Do I need to get them linked under one id to get fee free? I'll email my RM as well. Thanks heaps.

I believe most people get their RM to open up a US account for them. I don't have a premier account so I'm not sure. I do think getting your RM involved could be useful to link the accounts.

righto. I was in a rush so I applied directly, the US account was opened within 5 business days, which was pretty good. I'm in a bit of spot, I applied for Amex via GT route having read that address proof is very randomly asked so I went ahead without the proof.
But unfortunately they asked me to supply an address proof, so have sent them a wise US statement and parallelly started working on HSBC US. I think by the time the first HSBC statement is generated, my Amx application will expire assuming they don't approve Wise as address proof.

I have UK & Aus Premier accounts. You can link them yourself online via online banking

If the authorised user does not have a SSN / ITIN, the main cardholder can contact Amex by telephone / chat and provide the authorised user's passport information.

The authorised user can create his / her own Amex online without a SSN / ITIN through the Amex app. Authorised users with their own Amex account can register their own supplemental card for Amex Offers.

Has anyone struggled with what has been considered a "restuarant" with the green card? There are places that I would consider restuarants (e.g. a sit-down pizzaeria) that isn't considered one. I seem to find that those who use square as a payment system tend to have it miscoded as groceries.

Yes, this is also a problem for using the monthly dining credit on the Marriott Brilliant card, unfortunately there's no real incentives for the restaurant to ensure its classification is correct so it's really a trial and error to figure out which restaurant works.

That sucks. Do you know if those miscoded as groceries would get 3x points with the plat edge card? ;)

Question re. 2nd Amex application

I've held the no-fee Amex Hilton card for over 2 years (acquired via Global transfer from Aus) and now have a FICO score of 770. I have a US HSBC premier account for Proof of address but no SSN or ITIN.

As my 2nd card, I'd like to apply for the Amex Gold - ideally via the Resy offer to get 75k (instead of the 60k that I see when being logged in under my Amex account).

Has anyone (without SSN/ITIN) NOT done their 2nd application via GT and been successfully approved? Has anyone used a 3rd party link (such as the Resy one) and been successful, or is GT multiple times the way to go?

Ps. The Resy application when asking for SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER offers one to choose
"I don't have a credit history in the US, but have had a credit card or loan in Australia, Brazil, Canada, the Dominican Republic, India, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria or the United Kingdom. (If you have a Social Security Number, please enter it below.)"

I had my Marriott Bonvoy for about 1 year or so maybe and had my FICO when I applied for my 2nd, which was the Amex gold via Resy too. Logged into my U.S. account and applied. Can’t recall the specifics but I must have clicked no SSN. I think I got called for some verification questions but they weren’t a big issue.

There are referral links floating about for 90k if you’re more interested in the points as opposed to the statement credit.
