Qantas Delays/Cancellations

Looks like QF11 pushed back again and is rolling to the taxiway.

QF93 with @jrfsp on bord departed 12 mins ago finally.

QF1 in Baku not yet on F24.

A388 VH-OQH as QF1 had taken off from SIN on Friday 23 December 2022 at 0109 hours, against a 2355 hours scheduled pushback so it was about 50 minutes late in the air from Singapore.

GYD (Baku Airport) is seven hours behind AEDT. It landed at 0708 hours local time (1408 AEDT), a couple of hours ago.

This will mean tonight's QF2 ex LHR is delayed by many hours, way beyond tomorrow.

TripAdvisor lists 427 hotels in Baku, the Azerbaijani capital, so hopefully beds will be available for all including no doubt a full or extremely close to passenger load.

The temperature in Baku is nine degrees with a wind of only 11kmh, even though the city is apparently known for its harsh winds. Like many of us I've yet to visit any of the 'stans', although I have been to Russia.

While as yet unclear, there may also be delays to other QFi A388-operated flights in coming days.

A passenger called it a 'smoke sensor in the cargo hold'.

There were 356 passengers on board, not as many as I thought.

Given the previous experience of airlines such as SQ with A380 unscheduled stops at Baku, one wonders if passengers may not be allowed to alight and go to a prearranged hotel.

Flying a crew to fix the aircraft from somewhere in Europe, or perhaps London given QF would have staff at the latter, may see a 36 or 48 hour delay to the aircraft. Impossible to estimate at this stage.

Australia has diplomatic relations with Azerbaijan (to iron out any difficulties QFi faces today) but oddly our 'Extraordinary Ambassador' is in Ankara, Turkey, a city I have visited, but it's almost 1900 kilometres from Baku's airport by road.
 
Continuing with an eventful Friday 23 December 2022, A388 VH-OQG as QF11, the 1120 hoyrs late morning SYD-LAX took off at 1505 with a same day 0856 hours arrival suggested, 171 minutes behind schedule.

B789 VH-ZNG as QF93 (1100 hours MEL-LAX) took off at 1448 for estimated same day 0915 hours arrival, 175 minutes behind.

QF2 (A388 VH-OQK) from LHR to SIN should arrive in the very early evening at 1802, 32 minutes behind schedule.
 
QF1's diversion to Baku grans the headlines but of immediate interest to domestic passengers is continuing delays (though variable) thanks to this morning;s fog in MEL and yesterday's storms.

On Friday 23 December, QF624 (1520 hours MEL-BNE airborne at 1703) has B738 VH-VYZ with suggested arrival becoming 1754 hours, 84 late.

B717 VH-NXM is operating QF1720, the 1545 hours mid afternoon HBA up to BNE. It took off at 1728 with arrival at gate likely at around the 1856 hours mark, a similar 86 minutes behind schedule.

Pax affected by the return flight will likely be eligible for EU261, hopefully will still arrive home for some of Christmas day!
 
Continuing with Friday 23, QF146, the 1615 hours AKL across to SYD (A333 V-QPB) was in the sky at 1948 so expected arrival on the dot of 2100 hours mid evening will be 190 minutes late. The unpunctuality is because earlier today QF143 was three hours late, and before that QF88 ICN-SYD 88 late. It looks like QPB had to substitute for another unavailable plane.

QF103 (2040 hours SYD-HNL) is displaying as a predicted 75 minutes tardy pushback (2155 tonight) so if QPB is forming it that explains.

VH-ZNB on QF10 from PER to MEL is arriving at 2123 hours, 58 minutes tardy.

QF650 PER-SYD, diverted to ADL. Still on the ground . Looks like they will be heading to bed in ADL for the evening . No chance now of getting airborne and into SYD before curfew.

This flight has A332 VH-EBS and is the 1325 hours PER-SYD airborne at 1438, and if on time, due into SYD at 2035. Wonder what went wrong, as given it was only about 55 minutes late taking off, normally it should be in Sydney at its arrival gate with a good margin before the 2300 hours curfew kicks in.

No idea why and obviously overshadowed by the QF1 dramas, but QF43 diverted to CGK last night causing an overnight delay to QF44 which will depart 20:50 this evening. Unfortunate for the passengers.
 
Friday 23 December 2022's QF1 (A388 VH-OQB), the 1705 hours SYD-SIN-LHR took off at 1802, arriving SIN at 2252 hours, 42 late. It then did the same from SIN at 0114 hours on Saturday 24, with LHR arrival estimated as 0652 hours, 37 late.

VH-OQH that has been marooned in GYD since 0713 hours on Friday 23 is estimated to depart at 2230 Saturday local time (0530 AEDT on Christmas Day), arriving LHR 2310 minutes late at 2330 hours on Saturday evening (1030 AEDT Christmas Day).

Friday night's 2040 hours QF2 ex LHR is estimated to depart at 0930 hours on Saturday 24, using VH-OQB with a two and a half hour turnaround. Eventual suggested arrival in Sydney is 1845 hours on Christmas Day. The same timetable, a day later, is proposed for the scheduled Saturday 24 QF2 ex LHR, so another overnight delay.

A333 VH-QPC on QF20 ex MNL arrived in SYD on Saturday 24 at 0658 hours, 43 minutes tardy.

QF103 on 23 December (A333 VH-QPB), the 2040 hours evening SYD-HNL was not airborne until 2314, post curfew, so HNL arrival same day is predicted as 1127 hours, 122 minutes late, meaning QF104, a notorious late runner, will again be delayed. This flight along with QF87/88 to/from ICN and QF19/20 to and from MNL has to be one of the worst performers, though some TransTasman flights also suffer numerous delays.

This aircraft was A332 VH-EBJ. QF43, the 1630 hours 23 December SYD-DPS was in the sky at 1655 hours, on time or even five minutes early, arriving as Must...Fly! mentions at CGK at 2044 hours local time (2344 AEDT). Scheduled Bali arrival is 2000 hours.

QFi is suggesting that after crew and passengers rest, hopefully all in hotels, the flight will depart CGK at 1630 on Saturday 24 for DPS arrival at 1815 hours, 1335 minutes late. The overnight delayed QF44 is estimated to arrive SYD on Christmas Day at 0600, as soon as curfew lifts, 1410 minutes late.
 
In more on 24 December, QF189 (B738 VH-XZA), the 0725 hours morning SYD-TGP) took off at 0756 hours with gate arrival suggested as 1413 hours, 38 minutes behind schedule.

After arriving from DEL with QF70 at 1638 hours, 283 minutes tardy, A332 VH-EBP ran empty from MEL to SYD on Friday 23, taking off at 1906 for arrival at 2014 hours mid evening. On Saturday 24, it is operating QF197, the 0600 from SYD to BNE and then APW that did not take off until 0741. The BNE stop should commence at about 0754 hours.
 
A number of flights departing ex-BNE last night were delayed due to (I think) an air traffic management staffing issue (I didn't quite catch the Captain's announcement). This exacerbated the late departures of some northbound flights, as they had to backtrack before heading towards their destinations. Impacted flights included:
- QF826 to DRW
- JQ674 to DRW
- JQ936 to CNS
- CI54 to TPE
- QR889 to DOH
Plus others, I haven't gone through them all.
 
QF6025, a special to pick up passengers stranded in GYD from the defective Thursday 22 December QF1 ex SYD, took off from SYD at 1139 AEDT with arrival suggested as 2110 tonight Azerbaijani time (0410 AEDT Christmas Day).

Presumably the crew from the stranded QF1 will operate the GYD-LHR sector.

Engineers are coming from London to inspect and fix the defective A388.

QF11 with VH-OQK is estimated to depart SYD at 1210 hours (50 minutes late) on Saturday 24 for LAX.

But while depreciated, these A388s are not 'cost-free' to maintain every day, so when was the 'extra one' scheduled to re-enter revenue passenger service?
 
In more on 24 December, QF19, the 1225 hours SYD-MNL has suddenly been delayed in pushback to 1900 hours tonight, meaning arrival at about midnight MNL time. Unimpressive, especially since this flight has run badly late so often in recent weeks.
