Anyone Have A Place They Would Like To See But Think They Won't Make It There?

.Iran (Taliban)

The government of Iran may not be nice, but its not Taliban and little risk of that. Had a great tour there a few years ago.

My list:

Biggest loss - Kamchatka Peninsula (because its Russia)
Second biggest loss - Sudan (civil wars)
Then:
Remoter parts of China (because its China)
Afghanistan
Lake Titicaca (elevation)

Vietnam - with a fish allergy and the language difficulties I can be sure I will be told no miss it's OK no fish in this because they just want to be helpful

India - I just think if I go now I would want to go 5 star to soften the blow and can't justify that

I'm hoping southern Africa is still a possibility

Afghanistan and Iran would have been interesting but I think I've left it too late

I have stood on every continent so that's a bonus

The Taj Mahal ,, but I dont want to go to India ! My grandfather on my mother side was born in india.

The places I have not yet given up on but may end up as a pipe dream include Tibet, Mongolia, Butan. We also like trains, this year we planned to travel on the Amtrak Adirondack as we were there at the time when the foliage turns however the train was not running (post Covid thing). As I only need a whiff of a reason to head to NYC there is a chance this may happen in the future. The other train trip I would like to take is the full length Trans-Siberian rail journey.

A little OT I would like to be involved and/or compete in the Peking to Paris rally, we have vehicles that could be entered as class B and C however they are not setup to rally. I also know that there is no way MrsM would agree to the cost to get these vehicles into rally condition, freighting car(s) to China, back from France and most likely the recovery from somewhere in between. I will put it out there, if there is someone that is looking for and willing to take on a co-driver, tag-a-long be it a navigator, bag carrier, tent setter upper, would be cook etc. I would be most interested in hearing from you.

we had our "5 stans" trip planned for 2020, but of course cancelled and now wondering if we will ever make it there.

interesting thread.
the other day a friend asked a variation ... what place have you been to that you enjoyed but will never return.
My answer - Syria, more specifically Aleppo.

I'm still trying to get to my 5 Stans trip from 2020, but Turkmenistan is still 'closed'. I have to decide whether I can wait 🤔 or whether I settle for 4/5 Stans.

Also interested in the 5 Stans, actually 7 if you count Afghanistan and Pakistan....I personally will wait til Turkmenistan is open before I consider going. When I no longer wish to go to US, may get to Pakistan but Afghanistan will be a no go zone for me. :(

Well places I wanted to go to and got closebut failed and very unlikely to get there now.
Pitcairn Island. Was booked on a cruise a few years back but it got cancelled 3 weeks before we left. Was from Honolulu to Easter Island. Was put on again a year later but fare had more than doubled and we didn't have enough readies.

Trista Da Cunha. Got within 12 miles but a Force 12 Atlantic Gale forced us to miss a landing.
Most others I have not yet completely given up on.

Places I have been but won't go back,
China -have seen all I wanted to and now their Government's attitude to many things puts me off.
Russia but saw most of what I wanted to see.
USA. We have slept in all 50 States but now it is too divided a country and other places beckon. Would still like to revisit Canada.
Mexico.

I have emails from Sundowners Overland (who we were booked with in 2020) advertising departures in May & August 2023, plus a few more in 2024, which include Turkmenistan.
I guess they are hoping the place opens up by then. Would need to clarify what happens if not.
