Apple Airtags

So just reading the reviews on Choice about Bluetooth trackers. The guy that was in another country was still able to track his Apple airtags because of other Apple products nearby but I can't quite workout how the Tile brand works if you're out of Bluetooth range. Any explanations and play nicely please  and don't say GIMF because today it isn't
Apple AirTags lock on to any iPhone via Bluetooth nearby and use the network to communicate with base then with your iPhone.

I was an original Tile adopter (pre-ordered before they were for sale, when I was in Canada). Gave 'em up as too bulky. I found one in my odds 'n ends drawer the other day.

the old ones don't have a replaceable battery. I've got one sitting next to me on my desk. I probably should just chuck it in the bin

Mine will arrive just a week before we leave, 🤞😂 ordered through Qantas points. Not worried about the chain thingies. Edit. I lied. I found four cheapies key chains on eBay.

@blackcat20 - that should still be fine to use iPad?
Which brand? Or noname?

Funny one with an Air Tag today. My phone came up and said that one was travelling near me, and gave me the partial phone number, and a couple of options. But it was my phone number and tag, on my keys. Something was confused.

Just bough some AirTags. We originally used TrackDot GPS Luggage trackers. (Trakdot - GPS Luggage Tracker) They we're ok and used old 2G GSM/Mobile tech but didn't work in some countries and required an annual subscription. Then the service essentially dies so we had to throw them away. They kept promising a new tech version buit thet didn't eventuate.

ps: I juct checked and they still seem to be available from Amazon. Strange since the service is not available.

"It is now confirmed that as of September 30, 2018, the connectivity service of the Trakdot 2G device is no longer available from its primary service provider. The Trakdot device itself remains functional, it is the 2G connectivity service that is no longer available; therefore, the Trakdot device ceases to operate."

'Find my ..." shows up a problem with secreting an iPhone on your person:

A violent Tasmanian criminal who denied to police stealing a GPs expensive mobile was foiled when an application, ‘Find My iPhone’ pointed to the device being secreted between the defendants’ butt cheeks.

Ahem ....
A good story but it’s not really that accurate is it? It can find your lunch table but the rest is up to imagination I suggest!

Ah, you can keep it.

The phone points in their direction, and gives a distance, until you get within a metre, and then it just gives distance. So, it could work, but....

Well this was a bust. I used points on the Qantas store on 28 April. Supposed to arrive by May 12. Still processing on that date. I emailed them. They phoned me and said they’d get info from the supplier. Today I logged in and the points have been refunded. On the other hand the eBay tags I ordered for them have arrived. Sigh.
