COVID-19 and Tennis

Not surprised but his life is looking rather painful right now...

1. Deported from Australia (knock on impacts when visiting other countries)
2. Unable to play in the Australian open
3. Potential sponsor loss
4. Probably unable to play in the French open
5. Constant media attention (realistically a bad thing)

Have I missed anything?
US requires vaccination to enter so he'll have to miss Indian Wells, Miami and maybe the US Open later in the year if the rules dont change

And as he used the recent infection as a means of entering Australia it’s obvious he doesn’t have a relevant medical condition.

I wonder how many times he'll catch Covid and quickly recover in the 4 weeks before a tournament that requires vaccination to participate, opening the door to trying the same exemption path?

Is it the visa entry rules and/or the State laws for public arenas?

I'm aware New York won't allow unvaccinated in arenas - apparently a law not allowing a basketball player to play home games (but curiously unvaccinated visiting players are allowed to play one-off matches in New York)

But, so what? He’s well paid…hideously so for someone who simply chases a ball around a court. He doesn’t get to be above the rules as well.

Funny how their freedom is important, but the freedom of others isn’t.
Oh I agree competely. He's an dilusioned idiot and tried to game the system. Notwithstanding that, he's one of the GOATs of tennis.

Wimbledon offers no participation guarantees to Novak Djokovic amid threat of grand slam ban

"
Novak Djokovic is under threat of a grand slam exile after he was told he would need to be vaccinated to play at the French Open and Wimbledon gave no guarantees he would be allowed to defend his title this summer.

The French government became the latest to ban those refusing to be vaccinated against coronavirus from the country’s stadiums in a move which will also impact the Six Nations and Chelsea's Champions League campaign.

Djokovic faces being locked out of three of the four majors, with the United States having already joined Australia in imposing a policy of mandatory vaccinations on foreign visitors.

Wimbledon also provided no assurances that it would allow Djokovic to play – even if the UK government continued to permit unvaccinated overseas sportspeople to come here to compete and train."...

"
Christophe Castaner, head of French president Emmanuel Macron’s ruling LREM party group in the country’s National Assembly, said Djokovic defending his title at Roland Garros unvaccinated was “out of the question”.

He added: “He can’t come if he doesn’t respect a rule that applies to spectators, ball boys and girls and people running boutiques at the French Open. In what world would we be living if, just because you are a star, you can break the rules?”"

Cincinnati as well. How about Montreal? What are the Canada rules?

With his reputation under scrutiny and his sporting world collapsing all around him he should be reminded it is a situation all of his own making. Having tried to game the system, it is just possible, had he kept his mouth shut and quietly returned home, this snowball might not have gathered momentum. The only thing that can save his brand now is vaccination and a seriously good PR machine that does not include his mum and dad.

How do you silence Djokovic's family? ask them about vaccination.

There is another out for NoVax - to lay the blame squarely upon Tennis Australia and have their CEO fall upon his sword. He can say he was misled into believing he could play with the exemption they granted him. But he can't use this excuse for the next tournaments he'll miss.

In the small quote of Djokovic's mum, it sounded like she was pro-vax but accepted she couldn't influence a 30-plus Year old son.

But it won't change the fact he isn't vaccinated and can't imagine France et al giving a toss if TA falls on their sword. So while it might be a satisfactory conclusion for him it doesn't change anything materially.

When asked if she supported her son'd decision not to get vaccinated, Dijana said: “Novak is 34-35, even me as a mother I don’t have any choice to make pressure on him.

“He has his own philosophy of his life. If he thinks like that, I can just say OK.

Exactly, the damage is done. But he'll always have his supporters regardless of what he does, seems to be a common thing in this modern world (or am I just getting older and crankier?)

Yes to both 🤣. As am I. And add the instas and the influencers who work very hard at doing a job that no one needs.

/off-topic rant not related to tennis

Social media has put society on a complete 180° path to the ideals that were promised by it. Instead of it becoming a tool to learn and form opinions by hearing from a diverse range of views, its mostly used as an echo chamber to reinforce our limited knowledge. And the Social Media companies know this - notice how all the ads, promotions and suggestions you'll get are only based on what you're already looking at? What this does is to normalise one's beliefs no matter how ridiculous it is.

Think the earth's flat? well previously you'd have had a tough time finding other that believed that, but now that there's an entire group of like minded flat earthers, it's no longer a outliers view, in fact finding others with that shared opinion starts seeming completely normal because you'll start thinking "but more people than just me support it". You don't want to go down the rabbit hole of deviant and/or dangerous behaviours this can encourage

Social media can be a weapon for good, but the positive feedback loops they create are not good for anyone.

Did we all know that Djokovic was trying to setup a Splinter tennis association? I imagine it'll now be an even lonelier club than it was before.

Many have noted that ND seemed to believe the rules did not apply to him and sought to get round them so that it was good riddance as he didn't respect the rules. A thought occurred to me that a number of people choose not to check in to venues. Perhaps they are similar and don't believe the rules apply to them either. Now I couldn't give a fig about whether they check in or not as it's people's choice except if people are respecting the rules one would expect that people would check in. YMMV and I will duck now. Not getting into an argument it was just an observation.

But that's what I want. If I like tennis, why would I want feeds on rugby? Or if I like hot guys, why would Insta or Pinterest show me old women? I would stop using them. Social media is more like an automated search engine to me without doing the legwork.
