Be fair - he said they had people currently modelling the thresholds. That work has to be finished, then they have to get a bunch of squabbling premiers to agree to it before anything can be announced. Can you imagine the hysteria from Queensland and Western Australia if he just arbitrarily set thresholds and dates!

Even without the cap reduction QR was poised to offload another 500 passengers next week. Now that figure will be even higher.

Why was that? I've seen a few posts (not just here) about people getting bumped by QR.

I have heard that they still overbook vs. likely caps...is that the case? Had they previously made an assumption of increased caps from say July 1?

Well I was happy to see it. It’s a plan with defined progress through the stages. Getting premiers to agree to the stages was a good first step, although they already seem to be trying to weasel out of some of it.

Anything is better than this directionless vacuum we seem to have been in.

next step is to let them (scientists hopefully), come out with vaccination levels and get all the states to agree to them.

after that it’s in our hands - no one can force anyone to get vaccinated, but if we don’t do it then we won’t move forward. Some sticks would help at this point.

However I have had a win today - my daughter’s parent-in-law have just made vaccination appointments- I am worn out with all the (hopefully tactful) hassling I have been doing

madrooster, would it be your guess that the 50% cut in caps means that most economy passengers, even in Y class, are likely to be cut from flights? That is, it'll only be J and PE from now on?

IMO, I'd think so. In 2020, when the inbound caps were very low (I don't know how low they were in comparison to the news today) Y pax were constantly booted from flights.

From an airline revenue standpoint as well - to me, it makes sense. The airline can only bring in, say for discussion's sake, 10 people. Then they better bring those 10 people in the highest possible fare, so that the airline can make some money .. if they bring in anyone in Y, even if paying the highest possible Y fare, it wouldn't be close to a J or F fare for the trip.

My mates have been through instances where if they were booked on Y, they were told by the airline that their flight is cancelled due to low loads. But after a while they got another call from the airline offering to fly them if they chose to pay for a J or F seat. I think this was Emirates, can't remember. Same story with QF QR as well, I'm told

Some mates have got their call that flight is cancelled and in the same call, they were offered a seat if they can pay extra for the J or F seat.

And all the J seats were in the $4K to $5K mark and F was in the $7K mark one way into AU

One of my mates had actually paid for a Y seat and they paid the difference in the airport to take a J seat as he desperately wanted to travel

There was a point in time in 2020, when anyone I know wanted to travel overseas I strongly recommended they be ready to shell out $$ for J seats at a minimum

Totally agree, it was an announcement of a plan to have a plan, no doubt because of the media pressure to come up with a plan. But I worked on managing large scale programs and projects all my life so I know a bit about project planning. To have a plan you need clear objectives and timeline, both missing here.

But no doubt will fool many who are keen to believe the Prime Minister despite the evidence.

That sounds cheap . My daughter paid $12,000 for a one way J into Aus. It should have been $14,000 but apparently if she booked a return, one way J and one way Y, she saved $2,000

I've already had my first AZ (thanks @Flying mermaid) , just have to wait for the 12 week interlude. But it does not make one iota of difference to my situation. Maybe eventually, but not in any sort of timeframe that is anything like acceptable. My rage is burning right now and I just need to find some way to channel it. But that's OK because in 10 minutes I will be back to the depth of despair.
