Philippine Airlines sacks staff

With the coronavirus and bans on flights between Philippines and places such as mainland China, PAL Holdings (about eight per cent IIRC owned by Japan's NH) has said it's retrenching 300 staff, or about four per cent of its workforce.

One analyst said this was insufficient.

PAL i(airline code PR) s largely owned by Filipino tycoon Lucio Tan, who is in his mid to late 80s and who has other companies like Asia Breweries.

The MNL - PER route that commences in late March 2020 (second try) is not threatened.

Contrary to what I said above almost 15 months ago, there's no immediate chance of the MNL - PER route resuming.

This airline had a combined flight MNL - SYD - MEL - MNL yesterday, but used a smaller A321 (which has 12 lie-flat business class seats, in that innovative design similar IIRC to JetBlue of the USA.

I doubt there's an Asian airline of any size that's not in financial trouble.

Rumours at this stage is that PAL will be only keeping a few 77Ws (the 4x owned/encumbered) units for assumably daily MNL-LAX/SFO ops as their only long-haul.

From its timetable, it's operating regularly from MNL to YVR/YYZ//LAX?SFO and has continued to operate, albeit infrequently, to SYD/MEL and less often, BNE, so that part of what you suggested hasn't turned out to be totally correct. It's also running rarely to LHR. This may increase in the future.

PR has begun operating regularly to SYD and MEL but frequencies in December 2021 are way less than pre-COVID-19.
