Qantas now running flights to nowhere ... literally.

Any guesses where the destinations could be from the clues?

And wonder if this stacks with the latest Platinum newsletter discount offer ...

From QF website:

We’ll operate a series of exclusive Mystery Flight adventures where you book a flight without knowing what destination you’ll end up in until you join 120 others on a surprise adventure day outing. The destination will be revealed as the aircraft commences its descent. You’ll also be able to live track your flight path on the seat back screens.

I heard on this mornings news that it would be non-capital city destinations.

It depends from city to city. Personally, having forked out on the the Scenic Flight back in October and got some travel booked (domestically) for later this year, I think I'll let this one pass although I'd be a bit more inclined to jump on if the Sydney flight fell on the other side of my Frequent Flyer End of Year Date (April 30 for me). If I was in Melbourne it'd be a decent way to kick off the year.

Any guesses from these clues to destinations?

Flights from Brisbane

This is the perfect getaway for you if you love:

  • country hospitality,
  • gourmet food and wine, and
  • the great outdoors.

Flights from Sydney

This is the perfect getaway for you if you love:

  • the tropics,
  • salt water on your skin, and
  • long lunching on the beach.

Flights from Melbourne

This is the perfect getaway for you if you love:

  • the great outdoors, including a little walking,
  • gourmet food and wine, and
  • regional farmers markets.
Sydney flight sounds like somewhere in north Queensland.

Going by the clues and pictures on the website, I'd hazard a guess:
Not sure about the other guesses but the first one is not a normal QF route, airport rarely (only once in my memory) lands 737s, and there is a photo on the website I'm 99% sure is that location (I'm a local).

These always sound like fun, but as usual I'll give it a miss.

My guesses:
BNE - NTL or WGA
SYD - PPP
MEL - LST

What's within 2h flying time of Sydney?
Where does it say that flight time is 2hrs? Granted to have a full day from 7am and return in the evening they won't be going too far. It is only 3hrs to Cairns from SYD so anything south of that would be doable in day.

I also note that the J and Y flex SCs earn are equivalent to the Domestic Australia Long Flights (1,501+ miles), but as the points earn are higher for the fare category they may be special earn on Domestic Australia Medium Flights (751 to 1,501 miles) so I am thinking the destinations are in that range.

Scratch that: forgot they are return flights 🙄. So these would fall in the Domestic Short Range Flights (0-750 miles) 2x20 =40 for Y and 2x40=80 for J.

The limited mystery flight experiences will depart from Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne to a destination within approximately two hours.

Brisbane-Orange? (look picture #2 in below link)

Also one of the pictures is Cataract Gorge, so @BNEFlyer's suggestion of MEL-LST seems on the money.

So has anyone booked this yet? Apparently there was a pre-sale opportunity for targeted Platinum One and Points Club Plus members that finished today.

Oh, I'm a Points Club Plus member and did not get an invite to a pre-sale. May be because I don't live in Brisbane/Sydney/Melbourne.

Google image search reveals where the Sydney destination might be (using pictures in the QF promo), and if it and the speculation above is right might represent better value (in terms of distance) than the speculated Melbourne destination (3.8x distance). Do we think those images are representative of where the destinations are, or just examples?
