I note that VA only accept "credit cards" as payment options on board, no cash.

Are debit cards or pre-paid travel cards (both with MasterCard logos) accepted on board, or must the card strictly be a credit card?

Debit will be fine. Pre-paid I'm not sure, but it's likely they can be used up to some kind of pre-set $ amount (which may be different from other types of cards for obvious reasons)

Debit card with visa or mastercard signs on it are ok for VA flights, have used them to pay for choccky bars on board.
Haven't tried the visa or mastercard cards that you can get from Auspost or Coles though, or VGW, only true visa debit card.
They will have card readers on one side of the cart/trolley, or the other, or they might go to the galley to obtain it.
Sometimes they will pass the card to the other FA to do the transaction, so it might be behind your seat row.
Its done by (processed by another company), so it will not appear on your outstanding transaction list on your bank's account page, and then, 3 days later, it will get processed.
Can't place the name of the company, but I think if I am not wrong, **(edit: its called on my bank's account statement, (Virgin inflight purchase), end edit, went back quite a while to see what my last purchase was)** its somewhere in West Melbourne.

Spot on.

Pops up for me as Virgin Inflight Purchase, Melbourne.

No matter where I buy an item.

Must say, that beef pie on the VAd menu looks quite nice, havn't had the chance to order it yet.
Edit: just had a look myself, ... if you go to the Virgin Australia website, and look on/under On board menu, it does say ((Virgin Australia is cashless onboard, we accept Visa, Mastercard and American Express credit/debit cards for onboard purchases)).

That beef pie does look nice!

They are definitely cashless for a while now.

Lets see, would definitely need a spoon to scoop up the pie meat, have eaten lots of pies in my time on dry land, (some people can bite into it without the sauce dripping onto clothing), and 2 wet wipes to wipe mouth after eating it.
Will try it on one of my next PER - east coast trips down the track, (if they have it on board), **sorry, we don't have that today... would be sad to hear**!

Prepaid cards surely would not work. The only means of chasing up a bounced payment would be I assume customer seat vs credit card paid for on booking.

I can’t recall if it was VA to JQ but recently they did state on the PA ‘cashless Cabin, we only accept Visa/MasterCard and major card providers etc..’

I accidentally used the wrong card once for I a card I just closed and the credit card provider sent me a bill in the mail for $8.

Have got a trip BNE - ADL in mid Dec, will try the VGW prepaid and see what happens for my chokkie hit.
Will be in Y, probably pretzels and water in the fare.
