Can you suggest a $50 wine better than Penfolds RWT?

To add to this I have picked up RWT 2015 (?) at sub-$100 prices through CM, which is a very appropriate price.

RRPs are a stretch for Penfolds, but hardly alone in this regard; consider Grant Burge Meshach/Shadrach for example. Plenty of wineries going down this route to try and segment the market a little bit. IMO it's distasteful and perhaps a bit short-sighted as consumers move to better value wines due to intimidating (but rarely realised) RRPs.

However, their top end wines are still fantastic, often exemplary, all the grimy sales tactics in the world doesn't change that.
Seriously, I was getting RWT at $30-35 ten years ago, inflation has not tripled prices. Each to their own but I can think of wines $30-$50 better than RWT. Don't get me wrong, it's a very nice wine but what it isn't is a great wine and that's what I want for close to $100.

$30-$50 better than RWT? Sounds interesting.
Care to elaborate? I like the RWT style and would love to save money whilst getting better quality.

Yes burmans please do list ALL $30-$50 wines better than RWT - I can't wait to grab some of these.

this is not an ad. but if you subscribe winefront for just one year and look at all those wines that are cheaper than RWT, you will need another cellar, thats if you only go by the points. but you might not be happy when you see they give lower points to some of your beloved wine.

now to suit your own palate, rwt is a heavily oaked shiraz, and this is also one of the reasons why rwt cost so much, the french oak. you will need to pay premium for such wines.

if you already have been trying others that is less oaky, there are quite a bit to explore, for big names like john duval and now alex head getting popular, they let the fruit do the talking rather than just combine them with the expensive oak barrels that they can afford.

the reason i recommended winefront is best there are 3 of them(+1) where they are not afraid to speak their mind, also on every wine they reviewed , they is a comment section where members and the 3 reviewers keep discussing the wine through out the year.

So let’s open this up to anybody - suggestions for wine in $30-$50 price range which is better than RWT?

Absolutely this is opinion only and nobody will be shot down for expressing their opinions - but if any member has suggestions please air them?

Oh and where to secure them more importantly - this is the ‘Deals’ thread after all

Marius simpatico,symphony
kay brothers amery
ruggabellus archarus(16,17) previous vintage are blends
wendouree shiraz-not the wine i like most but it is better than rwt

you can start with those,i don't want to be unfair but putting down some shiraz blends, those above are all 100% shiraz, some are even single vineyard.

some rwt i'm still cellaring is 04,05,06. around $70-$80 per bottle.

I thought the question was $50 cheaper than RWT. Go easy on all our members

Gift cards and cash rewards. You can buy Woolworths Wish cards for 5% off and click through Cash Rewards for a small % cash return

Altenatively, if you have an account with Suncorp (or others like AAMI, GIO, APIA, CIL) you can use the Suncorp app to purchase Woolworths Wish cards at 5% off. Instant delivery with Suncorp app. Wish cards via Cashrewards can take some time to receive, used to be a few hours but lately its down to around 20minutes. Might come in handy for those mad rush specials. I'm sure many of us have missed a bargain waiting for egift cards to arrive...

clonakilla O'riada , not because it is the lesser wine than the big brother ,it is just undervalue.
Mount pleasant st henry shiraz pinot.
serrat shiraz viognier
adelina shiraz mataro
wendoure shiraz mataro

a few grenache ( less or even no oak)

yangarra ovitelli grenache
head old vine grenache

all these wine i just listed doesn't have higher points than RWT in hallidays score system, but i'm sure you can easily find a lot more 97,98 or even 99 points in his book but it doesn't mean they are better than RWT

Standish is never a bad suggestion :). Personally, without even factoring in the provenance issues required to acquire cheap Penfolds, I'd take a full priced (currently $100 for what it's worth) bottle of Standish over a $50 bottle of RWT every day of the week.

Thanks for the list.

The only one I’ve tried multiple times is Amery and while it’s very nice Shiraz I wouldn’t put it in the same league as RWT. Block 6 on the other hand I do rate over RWT. Looking at past purchases only four years ago I got it for $55 so it would almost qualify for the list ;) sadly these days the price almost doubled.
