I recently took an overseas trip with Thai, no complaints as per usual.
My question is can I can claim any status credits or frequent flyer points with either my Qantas or Virgin memberships??
While the answer is no, you could credit the flights to the Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer program (subject to the KrisFlyer T&Cs). You can then transfer the points to your Velocity account, though you won't earn any status credits.

However one can transfer points from Krislyer to Velocity, and Krisflyer is part of the Star Alliance as is Thai.
Therefore as long as the points earnt are above the minimum transfer amount, you can award them to Krisflyer (free to join) and then to Velocity.
Your paid flight would obviously need to be eligible to earn points.
Also if you are not already a Krisflyer Member I am not sure whether or not you can claim for fights before you join, if you join now.
But if not it would certainly work in future. Note that the life is a Krisflyer point is 3 years from when it arrives in the program (you can further extend by paying), and unlike QFF and Velocity does not get extended by other points being earnt.
