It has always irritated me that when searching the QF site for flights it would list a fare as in a given class even though substantial portions may be in a lower class. But this is the first time I have noticed when the ENTIRE flight is in a lesser cabin. Is this a new glitch?

You mean new Qantas Enhancement ;)

I am a Qantas supporter - which is why such ridiculous things as this search "error" makes me cringe. Surely something like this must even be as far as illegal, given it is CLEARLY likely to catch out the consumer, selling them a product they clearly did not intend nor understand they were purchasing?

I see it as them taking as much money as they can suck from you, but giving you an inferior service.
You pay for premY and they give you flexY, or you pay for J on Au - NZ flight with a connection ADL - Au east coast - NZ and they put part of my journey as "(your flight from xyz to xx_ will be in economy)", it does irk me.
Don't think its a glitch.
I will try to pick alternatives if I see something like that appear.
But if no alternatives, and I have to be at a certain place, then have to take that fare and class if I have to go to a certain place.

May or may not be a glitch - either way, I'm sure they won't be in a rush to fix. I'm with the OP - it's irritating to have the bulk of the sectors on a flight search come up as a different class of travel. How hard would it be to have an option to only show flights that are in your selected class of travel? Then give you a warning/option to choose others if desired.

I find looking for awards annoying. No I don't want an award with flights in Y, but QF insists on showing those to me before I can change it to look for the seats I really want.

They should show all seats available up front, its so dam annoying click this click that.

Maybe it is a new concept of "PE saver" fare: the pax pays for PE when it is not available, so the airline is "saved" from having to provide a PE seat?

It may also be that you need to purchase that fare level (even though no Y+ seats available) to be able to buy the return leg in Y+.

Well I guess that would make enormous sense to the Qantas Management Team, but not to anyone else.

I came across this today as well:

It prices as a First class award at 152,000 points.

I just want them to correct the spelling of the word "bhat" to "baht" when the screen comes up transferring you to the Thai site, mentioning that your transaction will be in "Thai Bhat". Not only simply a sign of respect, but if it is the Thai website it was not written or proof-read by a Thai.

I have put three gentle nudges in, including mentioning it when I'm talking to the 131211 number, still no change after seven months.......

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I have submitted an online enquiry (and selected "Website" as the category) for a similar feedback and the required action was subsequently taken:

They don't offer mixed class fares - you can't buy outbound Y and return J (same ticket).

So the fare classes are probably blocked from combining. Same here, but highest Y must be allowed to combine with T/W.

Or something like that.

What I don't get as this is a paid fare that they charge PE but put you into Y all the way when there are no Y seats for sale.Isn't this fraud?
