Gift Cards at Supermarkets

I went a bit nuts with Coles MasterCard offer today. Got about 80 cards today. Had to visit 5 stores, found most of them in 2 stores, still some $100 ones left at Coles Fremantle. Still long way to get to 140 I bought in Mother's Day offer.

80 in one day is a lot. Must have taken quite a bit of time at the checkout.

At a local Canberra Coles recently I saw a gent with a basket 1/3 full of gcs and no other shopping as we both went in to the self checkout area at the same time. I had to wonder if they were an AFFer...

Ps. I should have made the Kingo meet-up to recognise faces :(

Absolutely no $100 Restaurant Gift Cards at the local WOW so I walked over to Coles, and plenty there so picked one up. My plan is to take it back to WOW and activate it there. Shouldn't be a problem should it? That will be one Christmas pressie taken card of.

Just looked at the restaurants and there's one called 'House of Crabs' in Redfern. Interesting.

It is an absolute pain to do the ATO. I will only do it in future for a big pay off. A couple didn't work, and it then becomes a big issue to get it sorted out with Coles, and you have no way of verifying if what they tell you is correct unless you have kept meticulous records and receipts etc, as the cards are not reconcilable with anything that we can see.

Actually.....

On the Coles receipt, directly under the details for each card activated there is a 6 digit number (502125) followed by a space and then a 3 digit number. This 3 digit number matches the last 3 digits on the 11 digit card id on the back of each prepaid Coles MC (and this 11 digit number is the one you need to enter to check your balance).

When I actually manage to track some cards down (rarer than hens' teeth) I do a quick check of the docket to each card (up to 10 cards per transaction) and then put the dockets in a plastic A4 sleeve until every card has been used up from that promo.

Simple reconciliation to ensure none get mislaid - put used cards in plastic sleeve as well.

No problem except that you have committed larceny.

Have had my drivers license photocopied to be allowed to buy 5 Coles MCGCs. Seems a bit OTT but there must be mischief going on

Hopefully not at YOUR expense. They may be able to ask to sight it but I am fairly certain they have no right to copy it - they are not a Govt authority not acting on behalf of one.

The next time you go there I would ask to see the store manager and ask for an explanation.

I'd consider making a hoo-ha but they were consistently the best supplied store during the Fathers Day promo ;)

What did I steal, the $5 for the activation?

You might want to look into the definition of larceny.

What if I took a can of coke from Coles without paying and then took that same can to Woolies and paid for it there?

This is larceny!

But can it be considered larceny if the card has no value until activated? :p

I was under the impression that Fairfax owned these cards and collected the money once activated after being paid for, via whichever vendor. Not that there was an inherent value. I shall return it asap.

Yes. Without doubt the item has value itself. It cost money to produce. It was personal property belonging to a person or a business. It is irrelevant that further value can be added to it.

I find it astounding that any person thinks it's ok to go into a business and take an item that belongs to that business without their knowledge, permission or payment and not think that they have committed a crime. Ignorance of the law is no defence at all.

You do realise that you just admitted that you knew that someone owned the property and earlier you admitted that you took it without that persons permission or payment. Case closed.
