Re: Virgin Australia: x% off bookable fares - Promo codes (ongoing)

I think you would like to fly to China on points.
The 2 main options are:
Fly using a Qantas classic award using Qantas points
Fly on a Singapore airlines using Krisflyer miles (either earnt or transferred from Velocity
I'll try to work through some sums later. Both options will have fuel surcharges
Welcome

Re: Virgin Australia: x% off bookable fares - Promo codes (ongoing)

MEL-PEK with SQ in Y would be 70,000 kris flyer miles, but booking online you get a discount of 15% making it 59,500 points + $792.05 in fines & taxes. Same flights in J would be 123,250 + $864.85 and F is 157,250 + 954.05 (would be F suite SIN-PEK)

Only have this on hand as was looking recently myself, can't comment on QF flights as I don't use them

Re: Virgin Australia: x% off bookable fares - Promo codes (ongoing)

May 2016 on SQ through VA codeshare 220,000 + around $140.00 return in J via Singapore.

Hi riceb0ii, and welcome to AFF. It is important that individual threads keep to the matter at hand as it is easy to get off-track.
This disccusion was moved to it's own thread.

Yikes! I really really dislike the whole notion of fines+taxes with relation to rewards, it just makes the whole FF thing laughable, at least for Y redemption. Last time I booked PER-PEK-PER cost me $1070 on SQ, will of course be more expensive out of MEL, but its still ridiculous. 59,900 SQ points are worth in excess of $1800 to me, but even at 1c each, its still $600 .... add the fuel/tax = $1392 (!!).

Mind you, the J idea seems financially a decent deal and F even better.

Re: Virgin Australia: x% off bookable fares - Promo codes (ongoing)

I couldn't agree more. I would personally never redeem for a Y seat, the same flight as above in Y was only $1100 and in my opinion better value by just paying outright for it.

The J & F rewards seats however represent great value as opposed to paying cash for the flights

In my opinion there are some good awards out there in economy.

Recently booked HKG-BKK one-way award for 2 in economy for 28,000 QFF points and ~AUD70. Got to visit 5 lounges with the wife. The one way airfare for 2 was >AUD600.

It would appear I am stranded in CNX in March and need to get to MNL where I booked a Qantas economy award earning QFF SCs returning home. A very simple SQ economy redemption CNX-SIN-MNL is 10,625 Amex MR points + ~AUD150. I can also book a one-way flight earn Velocity SCs and points for ~AUD500. I do not like the other expensive options available from CNX so good value in my opinion.
