"Choice" this month has reported the testing of 15 carry-on luggage pieces, priced $20 to $425 on the criteria of durability (including drop and puncture), stability, water leakage and ease of use. Strangely (I think) all but one were 4 wheelers and the small number tested was also odd.

Choice is a subscription service, so I won't give details, but the mag or the eMag could probably be found at your local library.

Their ranking by overall score did not follow price (not surprisingly). Top scores were from Delsey Chatalet 55cm (85%, $286) and LoJel Hatch Collection LJHA55PLM (85%, $256). One of the cheapies, KMart Protocol 50cm hard case was #6, $49.

They tested 15. The top rating one has a score of 85% but #12 came in at 76% as well, so I think the take away message is that you'll be fine as long as you avoid the few dud ones.

I'm a choice subscriber but don't pay that much attention to their overall scores as their weighting seldom matches my priorities - but the individual category scores are valuable. I will read with interest...
