I read somewhere today that Labor are planning to announce "The Real NBN" as a policy for next election. Maybe I should check copyrights! ;)

I hope so. They remediated the pits in my area a year ago. Half my council area got FTTP. My half got stopped. No word on which obsolete technology they will use. If they use the overhead Optus cable, that means the pit re-mediation was probably for nought.

Guy on reddit gets a quote from NBN for fibre to his place, as his premises was dropped off the FTTP lists. Got quoted $10-20k.

Now if they're quoting me up to $20,000 for 1,000 meters why did he quote 500 meters would be $2,250? if you trusted his words there it would be $4,500 for 1,000 meters & maybe a little bit more for the under road works.

I am in BKK at the moment, and have seen 1Gb fibre advertised. Not sure about the connection/ongoing charge though, or how far out of the city is would be available.

If we are talking about the $41Bn number lets have the rest of that SMH article shall we? Without the cherry picking?

The Coalition won power in September 2013, restructured NBN Co's board, and told it undertake a strategic review. The review came out in December with an estimate that a multi-technology rollout would have a peak funding cost of $41 billion, well above the Coalition's original $20.4 billion estimate and the $29.5 billion equity cap.

The strategic review also concluded however that Labor's fibre to the home network would have cost $73 billion if it had gone ahead – below Turnbull's earlier $94 billion guesstimate, but well above NBN Co's previous estimate for the Labor government that a fibre to the home network would cost $44 billion.
The multi-technology rollout could therefore save more than $31 billion, NBN Co's new chairman, Ziggy Switkowski, said.

I would tend to believe Ziggy's numbers over Conroy's thanks.

The principle problem with the NBN originates with Sen Conroy and his failure to negotiate with Telstra and decision to roll out a one size-fits-all monopoly NBN instead of a gradational mixed technology FTTN nd FTTH build with private telecommunication industry investment, a pattern followed almost thoughout the world. The previous government even made the NBN mandate that existing HFC cable and other competing technologies (and other already installed infrastructure) get pulled out of the ground and along with the fact that the NBN had no experience managing contractors or engineering expertise was a recepie for the cost overruns and inefficiencies that continue to plague the project. So yes - its no surprise that the NBN is still running over budget - because the whole thing originated on a beer coaster with almost zero thought, and then became a political football or "announcable" for its early life.
 
Not being on the NBN roll out plan i don't give a rats about it.

Working in a suburb that is currently being NBN readied.

I can't believe the shoddy workmanship that I have seen, NBN cable into buildings not protected by conduit 100%, conduit incorrectly installed.

In a 200m walk to our local cafe I can honestly say every NBN connection can be cut

I live in a vey modern 16 unit complex, NBN is ready to go, so far 4 residents have had it installed from each foyer into their apartments by their respective service providers, never seen such poor workmanship from them all, cables stuck to corners and ceiling, protruding conduit, wall render coming off, patchwork filling, an absolute disgrace.

Some renters and owners don't care, lucky, I'm moving in late Oct. so its not for me here, but should I require it in next abode these installers will be following my instal instructions and it will be done correctly.
 
Good luck... They are not your contractors and not paid much.

In many cases think they would have been better to run Cat6 from central NTDs - much easier to run in existing place.

Albeit the move to FTTB/FTTN means you don't have to run anything at all

Right there one said he is supposed to do at least 6 instals per day.

Do no make the mistake of thinking this outcome is accidental.

Turnbull was given the objective of destroying, or at least crippling, the NBN. He has succeeded.

The last thing this Government would want to do is give the impression a large-scale (or, heck, even small-scale) government project could be successful.

Yes as "father of the Internet in Australia" he's lived up to his rating. Just this time he didn't personally pocket $50mil. Appalling. If anyone in this bunch of medieval anti science idiots, he knows better. So depressing. What's the point of the LNP.

Typical city dweller view. There's already pretty much universal ADSL2+ in the cities, but even major towns have ADSL 1 or less. How about rolling it out where it is NEEDED first?

Oh really!

Needs of the few or the masses? Better connectivity where the employment, commerce and industry are will, IMO, lead to greater productivity.

There are few connectivity problems in the cities, and precisely because of the larger density and greater possibility of competition they can be adequately served by private industry.
 
Except if you let the private operators cherry pick the low $ install/ good revenue sites, then the NBN becomes more expensive for everyone else.

The NBN is ultimately a big cross-subsidisation for remote places
