QF to get 787-9

Is 'the plan' to get rid of every B744 (11 remaining if I recall) and all 26 A332s/A333s, or only some of the latter?

QF hasn't said they are getting them yet.

I thought JQ was getting 14 788s after canceling 1 from an order of 15. What happened to the other 3 if they are only getting 11?

The problem I see here is that they will probably install 3x3x3 seating in the 787 which I find quite uncomfortable in economy. The seats on the A330/80 and B747 fleet will be wider in economy,

Well what a big story! NZ has had them for a year and that's a country of 4 million people (and 30 million sheep)

We can almost certainly expect an announcement of 787 orders on 20 August.

No big deal.

a) most passengers (outside the wacky world of AFF :p ) don't look at finer detail like this. Otherwise EK & NZ would struggle to fill their 777's.

b) according to seat guru, seat width on NZ 787 (as an example) is same as seat width on QF 330 (both 0.3" narrower than QF A380). UA actually has seats 0.1" wider than QF 330...

Let's not get ahead of ourselves.

We still have A330s being remodeled and some coast-to-coast flights paying the price for it combined with redeployment on the golden triangle.

A possibility might be that the B787s would be used as domestic relief or significantly busy services, sort of the role of the B767 before the latter was retired completely. Maybe the A330s plying the coast-to-coast may be similarly replaced with such services, freeing up the A330s for other uses, e.g. international.

On the other hand, if A330s are retained for coast-to-coast and B787s are used to boost up domestic services, then a bunch of free B737s as a result would either boost lighter service routes (e.g. the newly created MEL/OOL), or perhaps create new ones.

It would be interesting if QF venture into new (or rekindled) international destinations.

No one, of course, knows what kind of product(s) / configuration will be installed on the B787s. I guess the options are, for J:
  • Skybed series, possibly bespoke configuration for the 787
  • Business Suite, possibly bespoke modelling for the 787
  • Recaro PE-style (100% compatible with Jetstar)
Like the A330, I don't see PE being installed and there is only one carrier in the world with 787s (as far as I know) that don't have a 3-3-3 configuration with slimline seats in Y.
