An Aussie lady has been arrested in Abu Dhabi for uploading a photo to Facebook showing an inconsiderate able-bodied person taking up two disabled car spots. Here's the story.

Why is it, I'm thinking there's more to this story.....like perhaps the car just might have belonged to..........

I guess the moral of the story is watch you say and print in countries where freedom of speech is frowned upon.

All the tall buildings and glitzy fountains in the world won't make up for a medieval way of thinking.

The owner of the vehicle was probably a local... disgusting.

It is advisable not to offend any Emiratis while in the UAE.
The criminal law is routinely used to remedy bruised egos.
I am suprised that someone who has reportedly lived there since 2012 was not keenly aware of this.
On a recent visit I was dragged to the police station, missing my flight, because, while driving to the airport, I offended an Emirati by failing to move out of the overtaking lane quickly enough.
I was hugely relieved that, in this instance, the police persuaded him to drop the matter and, after a few hours, I was on my way back to the airport with no further consequences.
However, it was made very clear to me that, in their view, they are their roads, and we have no business interfering with their use of them.
Obviously there are also some lovely, friendly, hospitable people there.
However it is important to be careful not to offend the others.

Wow!!! Just wow!!
Stopover not looking so attractive anymore :(

Wow this story and some of these posts really make me question whether to stay in Dubai. A stop over in Hong Kong sounds a lot better all of a sudden

True. My husband and I have different surnames and I'll be honest, I took a copy of our wedding certificate just in case we had issues at the hotel. Im told that usually there isn't a problem but I didn't want to risk it.

Im of the opinion that the UAE doesn't have a big sense of humour or patience for BS by those that are not UAE citizens.

Seriously I wouldn't leave the airport. And even then on the four occasions I've been through AUH this year I've put up with rude people pushing in at say the security queue. I served it up to one chap (he of course may have not been an Emirati) however thinking of that now, I'll keep my mouth shut next time.

Be aware that Abu Dhabi and Dubai are not only two different cities but two different Emirates within the United Arab Emirates.
Emirates within the UAE are roughly equivalent to states within our federation.
Dubai is more liberal than Abu Dhabi and more friendly to foreigners.

HK, Bangkok, SFO (via the revived QF service) all sound much more fun, and you can have fun as well.

But still, suppression of this sort of this nature is a good reason to fly via many other places that want to welcome you with the understanding you are a foreigner.

About 90% of the people living in the UAE are "foreigners". I think they're pretty good at dealing with them.

All that said, I like to travel and experience different cultures.........not all of them I agree with, but open your mouth with some of them and it will be shut, permanently.

I really enjoyed visiting the UAE and fully intend to return. My +1 often speaks her mind (most often about me ) but she had to accept that speaking her mind in the UAE may well land us all in trouble. Mind you, it was well worth it, just watching her grapple with holding her tongue was priceless! (for everything else, there was Mastercard )
