SkyBus gone up again [Now $23.90 one way]

Now that Skybus return fares have (on 6 March 2015) gone up to $36 return (but $18 single), there is no incentive for anyone to buy a return ticket, especially since some time ago the validity of the return portion was reduced to three months not six. $36 return is highway robbery. The new owners must be making megabucks (and the Victorian Government also taking its 7.5 per cent or so cut.)
That is highway robbery although in a way that is on par with what ConXion charges in Brisbane.

I'd be looking for ways to avoid paying that amount.

i was gobsmacked at the price rise after landing from perth after a 6 month stint
looking forward to a train from southern cross, i usually train from home to sky bus to airport

How much are cabs these days? If there are 3 pax, there doesn't seem to be any reason to use the skybus.

i paid about 30 dollars one way with the yellow taxi out the front of southern cross....

dont ever go with the private car guys they slug about 36 - 40 dollars

In what decade? These days just to do 20.5km in a taxi, without any stopping at traffic lights or tolls (impossible journey, you have one or the other), the minimum you would pay in the middle of the day would be at least $37. Add in either tolls or lots of stops along Mount Alexander Road, looking at at least $45. And more if outside the hours of 9am-5pm. Taxi fares published here.

Fully agree - if taking the tollway, there's $10+ on the meter before you get past the Ibis ...

Used the LAX FlyAway for the first time a few days ago. Leaves the Skybus for dead for cost and service ($US8 and they handle the bags for you).

It does not help the 901 case when the PTV Journey Planner only shows you Skybus options from the city to the airport even when Skybus is unticked in the search options.
I checked this out when I read your post and you were right. I wrote to PTV about it and they seem to have fixed it up. 901 is showing up again if you deselect Skybus.
