Just been having a look next year to CDG and LHR and for the life of me couldn't find a single J reward flight out of SYD through AUG and SEP

PE rewards were not much easier to find.

Seems like Velocity rewards are useful for bali and the USA and not much else?

Admittedly QF wasn't that much better, but I could find J and F awards for far less miles than a saver PE award with VA.

you are best to call as the online availability is not a true indication .... both EY and SQ have better availability over the phone

Looking online I've had no problem finding Reward seats as far as AUH in the past beyond that they never seem to show. If you check availability on the EY Reward website Book flights with Etihad Guest Miles what is available there is normally available when you call the VA GCC

I have always found J to Europe when needed, saying that I can be quite flexible. I have also found that there seems to be more available with Etihad closer to the dates than further away. Just booked Canberra to Munch via sydney (outgoing) and Melbourne (incoming) return in April 2015. There was limited dates but again I'm pretty flexible. Could also be worth waiting to see what the Krisflyer conversion rate is, Singapore seem to have pretty good available for Krisflyer members.

The EY tool does sometimes find more, and at least tells you how many seats there are. That said, I just had a poor experience with the contact centre who quite moodily insisted she could only see the same as I can see online, and was less than helpful. So sometimes you have to coach them through it with exact dates and suggestions.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.
