How many Velocity Platinum are there?

A couple of colleagues and I have long wondered what the percentage of Platinum VA members there are compared to Gold, Silver, Red and not Velocity members at all. The full lounge these days gives (I think) a false impression as we are all generally congregated in there and obviously there are many more VA flights than in years past. I have not failed to gain row 3 seating for close to 2 years now, so with only 6 x Row 3 seats in a typical yield of 135 (80% of a 737-800) the max would be 4.4% of all travelers but I have no idea how many people on a typical flight would have a Velocity membership at all.

Does anyone know the rough percentages?

Row 3 is mostly taken before I come along too. Probably get it a quarter of the time at a rough guess.

Or accept a middle offering!

Or even bother then with Y....

Funny, four flights (BNE-SYD-BNE/OOL-SYD-OOL) I have since re-selected seats as a Plat. 2~ months out, all within 4 days of each other. It was the last flight, SYD-OOL, that had all of Row 3 taken on a 738 & then 5 of 6 seats taken in Row 4; I managed to snag 4F (My usual selection when I was Gold if I couldn't reach an Window/Isle in Row 3). Who the heck am I flying with on a public holiday in a few weeks time.... Every other flight, 3F no dramas :)

As for how many plats. within VFF; You good make guesses.... I don't think they'd be very educated though, by any length, unless you had something from VFF itself. And I don't think they will disclose any clues besides how many overall numbers anytime soon.

You're assuming that everyone knows they can and then chooses to sit in row 3.

I think most WPs don't know or don't care, there are plenty of them in the rows further back, that's at least what I observe when queuing for priority boarding.

As an anecdote to this: the PA of my Managing Director (who is a VA WP) always selects his seat in row 4, "because that's where he used to sit when flying Qantas". Not sure if he ever questioned this or even notices.

I agree, I actually prefer way down the back than row 3. If you have checked luggage, there is no rush to get off and in the rare event of a crash, those at the back are much more likely to survive.

Does it really make much difference row 3 or 4?
I'm happy with row 50, so one less competitor for you guys who want 3 :)

Only advantage of row 3 over 4 or 5 for me is the additional personal space (legroom and no one in front who can recline). I am neither tall nor big but still enjoy this little bit extra. The 2 sometimes annoying minor disadvantages are the fold-out tray which more often than not is bent and not level, and the fact that you can't store your personal stuff in the legspace. But that's really minor. I agree in terms of deboarding time, it makes hardly any difference between the first 4 rows of Y at least.

There will be one less in a few weeks, I have not bothered to pursue WP this year as the difference between it and SG is nowhere near enough to justify it.

I tend to aim for row 4 or 5 a lot of the time. I'm not very tall and like to keep my bag handy if i can.

My wife is quite the same and doesn't really like row 3 because she can't have her bag by her feet. Admittedly she can barely touches the ground in any seat! ;)

There's also a better chance of getting a shadow in Row 4 than Row 3 IME.

Well that's all excellent chat (as I prefer row 3 for the leg room and I clearly am not competing with all of the other WP members). I'm still interested in opinions however of the percentage of Plat's compared to other classes and non members. My guess is 15% of Velocity Members and 5% of overall travelers, anyone else prepared to guess?

There's no way it's 15% that would mean over half a million platinums.

I'm SG and fly SYD-TSV a lot with VA and can nearly always get row 4 at 48 hours before departure. I don't tend to go for row 3 as I like to have my bag handy at my feet. If I took the aisle that wouldn't be a problem I guess.

I note on the priority boarding for these flights there's usually only half a dozen for that queue and some of those are in J. Numbers are a bit different for other destinations though.

No longer a plat here and couldn't be happier ;)

I still am but will be taking most of my business back to QF except for OOL flights. Not only is VA J and lounges not up to scratch but the effective removal of the so called "confirmed complimentary upgrades" is probably the last straw. It's also probably deceptive conduct under consumer laws but, who can be bothered pursuing.

What do you mean removal of "confirmed complimentary upgrades"??
