Batam, Indonesia is a hole. Bali is better.
Ok, good beaches, but the hotels price, beach prices, everything, well you are better off going to Thailand. For Aussies, there is a $10 6 night 7 day visa on arrival option (Sept 2012).
Could not find a cheap tailor with a decent fabric range (Vietnam is way way cheaper).
Plus. Alcohol and Smokes cheaper than Thailand or Singapore Duty Free (but Cambodia cheaper).
I bought a lot of supermarket groceries and took then back to Singapore for consumption - even cheaper than Malaysia.
