GLD/PLAT to be exempt from close-in fees, EP from redeposit fees - FlyerTalk Forums
Effective today, July 29, 2010, American Airlines is enhancing the benefits available to our AAdvantage elite status members.
Waived AAdvantage Award Processing Charges*
AAdvantage Executive PlatinumŽ members are already exempt from award processing charges for travel ticketed within 21 days of departure when using miles from their account. We are now extending this benefit to our AAdvantage PlatinumŽ and AAdvantage GoldŽ members, making it even more rewarding to be an elite status member.
Waived AAdvantage Award Ticket Change and Reinstatement Charges
AAdvantage Executive Platinum members will be receiving additional award benefits as well. Also effective July 29, award tickets issued from an AAdvantage Executive Platinum member's account will be exempt from charges associated with eligible origin and destination changes to MileSAAverŽ award tickets and from charges for reinstating wholly unused award tickets.
To see a summary of the benefits you receive as an AAdvantage elite status member, visit our
Elite Benefits Chart.
Your continued loyalty is important to us. This is another way we would like to show our appreciation to you. From everyone at American, we look forward to seeing you onboard soon.
Best Regards,

Got the email this morning.
This is great news as I'm on the cusp of EXP and about to book a whole lot of first travel for next year to churn the miles while on a 3month break from work.
It gives a lot of flexibility for organising travel if and when better options appear closer to travel dates and not having to pay the redeposit fee.
It underlines that AA is more a loyalty programme that runs an airline than the other way around!

Also does it underline that AA are struggling and are using every thing they can to attract business as you would expect them to?

I do believe it shows they are making changes in order to maintain/retain their elite FF members.
I have taken advantage of the fee waivers for EXP members and look forward to receiving some of those benefits when my status drops back to Plat or even Gold (thankfully now have Lifetime Gold).
The ability to make changes to award bookings, including changing booking class when U became available when originally booked in X on QF flights, with no penalty, is certainly a nice benefit.

No. It means that they are in a competitive market and some of their competitors are now offering the same or similar deals
