VIRGIN Australia’s Velocity Frequent Flyer business has followed the lead of the nations’ retailers by striking a direct partnership with one of Australia’s largest fuel retailers, BP.
The deal will allow Velocity Members to earn points on fuel and retail spend at BP’s network of more than 1400 service stations around Australia.
The deal comes after Virgin chief executive John Borghetti pledged in August to “turbo charge” Velocity after selling a cornerstone stake in the business to private equity firm Affinity Equity Partners.
Since then Velocity has struck a landmark deal with one of Virgin’s shareholders, Singapore Airlines, for reciprocal rights on their respective frequent flyer schemes.
Velocity Frequent Flyer chief executive officer, Neil Thompson said today: “We recognise the importance of rewarding our members on everyday spend and we are thrilled to announce a direct partnership with one of Australia’s leading fuel retailers.

I think this will be interesting to see what the offer ends up being. And how competitive it is with the EDR 2points/L.

Official Release - Velocity Frequent Flyer and BP announce Australian first partnership

17/11/2014
Velocity Frequent Flyer and BP today announced an Australian-first partnership that will see an award-winning airline loyalty program enter into a direct partnership with one of Australia’s largest fuel retailers.
With more than 1400 BP service stations around Australia, the ground-breaking multi-year deal will allow all members of Velocity Frequent Flyer to earn Points on fuel and retail spend at BP by simply swiping their Velocity card in store.
This is the first time an airline loyalty program in Australia has brokered a direct partnership with a fuel provider and will close a gap in the market in rewarding customers on this important aspect of everyday household expenditure.
Velocity Frequent Flyer Chief Executive Officer, Neil Thompson said: “We recognise the importance of rewarding our members on everyday spend and we are thrilled to announce a direct partnership with one of Australia’s leading fuel retailers.
“Today is a major milestone for Velocity Frequent Flyer as we introduce the ability to earn Points on such an important aspect of household expenditure for the first time in the program’s history.
“Our primary focus is to deliver the best rewards to our members and we will continually look at ways to enhance our offering and bring new benefits to our growing membership base,” Mr Thompson said.
President of BP Australia and New Zealand, Andy Holmes, said: “BP’s partnership with Velocity Frequent Flyer is an exciting new direction for BP in Australia, and is part of our commitment to grow our retail business in the Australian market.
“I’m delighted that this partnership will provide our customers across Australia with even better value and another reason to visit our stores.
“BP is proud to be working with Velocity Frequent Flyer, the award-winning loyalty program of Virgin Australia- a brand that is equally committed to doing more for its customers.”
The ability to earn Points through BP retailers will commence in early 2015. To support the partnership, BP will also launch a mechanism for customers to participate instore and earn Points through Velocity Frequent Flyer on same day purchases.
The deal follows the finalisation of the sale of 35% of Velocity Frequent Flyer to Affinity Equity Partners in October, a strategic transaction designed to accelerate the growth of the program and fast track its strategy to become a world-leading loyalty program.
Velocity Frequent Flyer now has more than 4.5 million members in the program and is free to join. Visit www.velocityfrequentflyer.comfor more information.

Don't go relying on the BP locator to find where your closest petrol station is

BP Locator.jpg

A bit hard to see, but I searched postcode 3124 (Camberwell, Victoria, AUSTRALIA).

My nearest petrol station actually is a BP, but unfortunately it doesn't sell 91 RON. :(

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

This seems positive. My local is a BP and I usually buy fuel there.

I've never heard of a petrol station that doesn't sell 91!

There's quite a few around here that sell E10 instead of 91 RON, rather than as well as.

The way E10, 91, 95 and 98 are priced here, only 91 makes financial sense in my car.

Of course, YMMV (pun intended).

Now that you mention it, I think this happens occasionally in Melb too. Some states don't require disclosure of E10 and some do (can't remember which is which).

E10 is only worth it if more than 5 cpl cheaper but it seems to be only about 2 cpl cheaper now.

Will be interesting...

If I buy fuel at wooltex, then the office saves 8c/L... (expensed)

if I buy from BP, then the office won't save money, but I'll make points... and presumably points on the amex purchase too

Hmmmm.

I wonder if it will still work if paying by Fleetcard?

I have an NLC Motorpass card and I already get 3 cents per litre off with BP which is great.
I doubt I will get points though (given that I can't get QFF when I fill up at Caltex using same card)...

I really really hope it works with Motorpass, i drive a very thirsty V8. The only downside is I wont be able to run E85 anymore :(

Hmm, don't we always earn (at lower rate) using VGW card at BP? 1 point per $2 spent?
If from this deal it becomes a 1:1, then yes, I would be happy too.

Nothing to do with global wallet, it's about getting points paying for petrol by cash or various cards and flashing you velocity card.

In my situation, I am the office and rarely worry about discount offers on fuel, but often use Velocity AMEX on the purchase. Without seeming to be presumptuous, it appears I may be in a win/win situation (which is rare for me with VA).
