Wouldn't it be good if they could integrate all the Australian public transport cards such as myki, Opal and go in the same way as the road toll tags? It would lighten my card wallet at least.

And save me forgetting one when I go interstate.

Edit: But I doubt the other states would want to lower themselves to MYKI's level.

I always thought it was an opportunity lost.. other countries (Japan) have integrated theirs. Especially given most of ours were developed so late but I suppose it's just too much to expect from state run processes. Opportunity for a third party product maybe?

What smart card transport payment systems are active in Australia and what regions do they cover?
Systems that cover entire states may be more worth while to link together then systems that cover single cities (or not even the entire city).

One of the main reasons Japan integrated their systems was because each JR company had their own, while the non JR systems in/around Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya also had their own and it was becoming problematic for people to have both a Suica and Pasmo for Tokyo.

Myki covers Melbourne + vline commuter services + local buses in Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo, Latrobe Valley, Seymour and Warragul. that's as close as you get to statewide. It does capture a high percentage of Victoria's population.

Technology is catching up. Myki, Opal et al may be superfluous.

It may be old news but I was checking the web page for my London Oyster Card the other day. They will now let you use a chipped credit card. Just touch the CC on and off as you travel around. At the end of the day the CC is charged the best adult fare.

No need for the system card itself unless you need concessions or season tickets.

That or bloody get NFC everywhere and a smartphone... Done!

And a choir of angels sing, "Hallelujah"!

That's certainly the way things are progressing. Hopefully companies develop and integrate this technology sooner rather than later.

It is happening atm in some fields, just not fast enough.

And with all that, it won't allow a single journey, as might be required by a visitor, except by paying the whole thing.

Its moronic.

But do the eastern states even know that Perth has a transport card that actually works? And seniors fares are properly integrated... As in free between 0900 and 1530.

Happy wandering - till you need a pre-paid land transit card

I'll note that SmartRider can also be used for regional town bus services in the major towns of WA.
NFC and contactless credit/debit transactions may well happen in the future, although transaction time is an issue at the moment. That said nothing would be as slow as the current Myki transaction times...
