Hi

Just wondering if it would be worth first paying to upgrade from Saver (work paid) to Flexi then using my complimentary upgrade on a Brisbane - Cairns flight on a E190?

I haven't flown on Virgin for about 5 years and was status matched Gold. And guaranteed to not maintain status

Depends on what time of day, and if you are that hungry. None of the E190's have the new business class seating yet, so its really just the meal and a guaranteed empty seat next to you up front.. Thus if you are after a bigger seat, I wouldn't... If you are never going to fly Virgin again before the comp upgrade expires, then i guess you may as well use it or loose it, but I'd save it for a trip to Perth or even on a 737 where at least you get a bigger seat.

That's exactly what I did: paid for a flexi fare then upgraded using one of my DJ comp Js Syd-Per on a A330 to and a 737 fro. The 330 was a magnificent product, so impressed; the 737 less so although the FA was absolutely terrific.

I'd therefore be inclined to use the J upgrade where proper J is available; especially if you have to pay the difference between a saver and flexi fare.

Totally off topic but does anybody know what meal is served in J 09:45 ex BNE and 09:30 ex Cairns?

Depends what dates as the menu cycles approx 2 weekly. At present ex BNE at 0945 it is morning snack which should be Simmone Louge egg and bacon pie and fresh fruit salad. Ex CNS again a morning snack which should be the same if it is a flight that originates out of CNS as CNS is not a J class catered port therefore doesn't have it's own cycle. The J class meals are therefore return loaded from the originating catered port. When the cycle changes it should be the Semi dried tomato fetta and spinach pie.

Last time I flew on the 945 ex BNE I got lunch as J is catered out of BNE for both sectors as it returns from CNS as a lunch time flight.

Thanks for that info! Can I ask where you get this info from?

For an E190 service, I wouldn't have thought it would be worth it to pay the extra to upgrade to the flexi.
Even if you never plan on using it, I still don't think it's worth playing the extra and the upgrading. But that's just me. I guess it depends how much extra the jump is going to be from saver to flexi?

Thanks for the posts.

It's about $80 to upgrade to Flexi

The 7:40pm flight is a return flight home. The day starts with a 6am flight down to Brisbane (so for me about 4:30am start)

Then all day at a training course.

We have done it a couple of times, hit and miss. If you get new plane is great and food is good (my son massive fan of the meatballs and wants to fly "Gold Class" every time!). Good distance so upgrading to Flexi will give you more SC if you need them.

Well in that case, for $80 extra I would consider it even if it is just for the extra comfort after such a long day. You could always hope for an aircraft change. I actually prefer the E190 to the 738 in Y class, but obviously the 738 is better in J.

If you are asking if it is worth it to upgrade then it makes me inclined to believe that flying isn't such a regular occurrence for you. After a long day, 4.30am right, hopping on even a E190 in business is a comforting experience with a nice hot dinner, personal service and getting off the plane first to get to your car/taxi first.

For $80, sure, why not? Have fun!
