I'm looking to do a flight LAX - GIG - SFO - LAX in october.

US Airways is about $130 USD cheaper than Delta, but I get Velocity miles travelling delta (shame I don't get status credits :()

I've not travelled either airline so was wondering if anyone with experience of either airline can say ya or neigh :p

I usually go on price, but my experience of US airlines is they have pretty out dated aircraft compared to this part of the world.

The question is, how many miles would you earn, have you worked it out?

Is it a considerable amount, or just mediocre and then might not be worth the extra $$. What about status, do you have any that you can use on Delta?

Based on nothing other than personal opinion, I'd choose Delta. The ability to earn Velocity points is a bonus.

A few things:
- Y or J?
- Rough total price to allow impression of the relative saving that is the $130 (ie. $130 difference on a $3k airfare, $10k arifare, $500 airfare?)

There are quite a few other options for that combo of destinations, although most would involve a transit, but may save significant $$$.

well...it's the difference between about 933 USD or 1170 USE - give or take.

That's in Y all the way.

If the flight got me status as well as miles with Velocity it's be a no brainer as i'd like to keep my silver status if possible.

I've done a few searches as US Airways seems about the cheapest.

That's just using the mmain sites like expedia, travelocity, kayak

I was thinking of these as options: LA via SCL, or AA via DFW, or MX/AM via MEX?

They're all options. Just the pricing is a lot more than either US Airways or Delta on the dates I want to fly

Unless you've got a < 1000 USD deal for me

I think US Airways are terrible and getting worse; I think Delta, now that it has merged with Northwest Airlines are trying to get better.

So unless you can do something with the miles you earn from US Airways then I would go with Delta.

Delta is definitely the better carrier here in terms of service quality and meals, and for the GIG flights, US Airways uses the really old Boeing 767-200ERs... the planes are fine, but the aircraft interior is not impressive. Charlotte of course will be an easier hub to go through, but Delta will get you some miles and better service!

I have had good experiences with US in recent times.... much better than a few years ago IME... I think they are getting better!

BUT - that was all domestic - and I must say that 762 looks pretty ghastly for a long haul.... if Seatguru is accurate in this case....

EDIT: IS that a stopover you need in SFO.. or was that just the routing on the cheapest fare you found LAX-GIG ??

If you don't actually NEED to go to SFO you can fly on CO LAX-GIG for USD$904... with a proper stopover in SFO CO prices around USD$1026 for some random dates I tried... but seem to have a better Y seat on their 767...

thanxs for the tips

i need to go to SFO to visit a friend there n get a few days free accommodation

will see how things go when Citibank finally transfer my Velocity points across. Not sure what the hold up is. QFF points take 1 day, and I'm up to a week now and still waiting.

Argh

Not even a contest - DL has much better service (if you get them on a good day :p)
