Which Smartphone?

I guess it will come down to your personal preference! Myself I look for:

Size - I like something small. Can't stand these the way smartphones have grown in size!
Tough - Able to take the ocassional knock and maybe drop. I don't like adding bulk to it by adding a case.
Offline Maps - Used to use Nokia exclusively for this reason. Google Maps now has a caching function, but beware it doesn't work for all countries due to licencing. I know there are other options, I go with Nokia's old mapping solution 'Here' which has free offline navigation too.
Camera - A solid camera that is able to take good low-light / night-time photos.
Battery - I would much rather a longer battery life than the latest high-def screen :)

I am using a Sony Xperia Z5 Compact at the moment. I still miss my nokias, but I am warming to the Sony.

I have the Samsung S6 Edge and I dont think I would recommend the Edge-phone. The phone itself is great but I see no use of the edge-feature. I have hardly used it at all and I cant get a decent screen protector fitted. It looks awesome, but I dont use it in everyday life.
I used to have the Sony Xperia, but it was such a hassle of getting screen protectors or a case, probably bcause the phones arent a best seller. Everywhere you look its for iPhones or Samsung Galaxy. I guess it might be easier today, getting them through eBay but the fact that I just couldnt walk into a store and get something annoyed me.

I would probably look at the Samsung S7 without the edge if I were in the market for a new phone today.

Nexus 6P
If you can wait for next nexus later in year...... Might be worth the wait!

I upgraded to a Samsung S7 last month, at the same time did an insurance claim on my S4 and received as far as i can tell a new one, which i gave to my partner. Am contemplating a swapping with her.
The S7 does take a slightly better photo. Missed the IR blaster on the S4 which was great for turning the volume up on TV's in the QF lounge or at the pub.

Cant you do that with a remote app? Even think there is one built in, but I havent used it. Keeps nagging me for an update though :D

The S7 does not have the Infra Red Blaster so it won't work, I checked on whirlpool cause i couldn't believe they would get rid of it. bit sad.
