I'm not too fussy which airport in Aus I end up at since I need to connect to ASP anyway. I suppose ADL is usually marginally cheaper than the rest.

Not all options are online which is why I'm asking, plus I'm currently a few points short to check fees etc on some J fares.

I gather QF, EK & BA are bloody expensive on the fuel surcharges etc and will probably cost around $7-800 on top of the points so they're out.
I flew CX last year on the same trip and paid around $380 equivalent I think which is my backup option if there's nothing better. They have a good J product.
I'm unsure about other airlines but have heard that JL is a cheap option - but isn't available online, I'd have to call QF. It would be nice to try a different airline.

I was considering buying a return ticket in economy on QF but would have to get a Saver ticket for the return leg for any chance of an upgrade (WP so should have a half decent chance) but this is $420 more than the Sale ticket, without a guaranteed upgrade, and a one-way economy to LHR is a couple of hundred dollars cheaper than even a return Sale fare, with the help of QR & BA, hence why now thinking of just redeeming an award flight for the return leg.

Returning flight in late May - probably around 24.

Thanks for any advice.

If you want see JL availability you can sign up to Awardnexus. On QR (via DOH) it will cost a few more points (75,000 one way in Y) but the additions are about GB284.

If you're asking which J award to book to get to Australia, I'd go QR to Adelaide. Not sure of the aircraft between LHR and DOH, but you get the A350 to ADL. As mentioned, that's also your best bet to get to ASP. I can't comment on JAL or EK J, but QR > CX >>>> QF >>>>>>>>> BA. I'd happily pay a few more points or $$$ to fly QR if I can afford it.

LHR-DOH-ADL will cost you 139,000 points in J on QR and GB354. The flight out from LHR is now a Dreamliner. Availability in May looks very good.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.
