On Sunday my wife and I am flying to London on QF9 from Melbourne then a week later flying to Bangkok via Dubai on EK metal, but QF flight number, then return via Sydney on QF24.
My wife is bronze and I am a gold frequent flyer, all flights in economy, ticket booked on 14th Feb 2013 using Qantas.com, so has on 081-xx_ ticket number.
Now this question would be simple if I had of booked after 26th Feb as they would have been the same, but alas I got in early. The allowance on my QF operated flights should be easy, as we booked before 26 Feb 2013 I reckon my wife is allowed 1x23kg bag and I am allowed 2x32kg bags. But what about on the Emirates code share flights?
I checked qantas.com and it isn't all that clear with code shares. The allowance page make exceptions for Jetstar codeshare and some Vietnam code shares, but makes no reference nor exception to any other codeshare. To my thinking that says that the Qantas allowances should apply to the whole trip.
To be sure I called Qantas and have had 3 different answers. The first was, hang on whilst I check qantas.com, she then came back with the above read verbatim from the website. I don't think she even though for a second about what I was asking, because Qantas.com is not all that clear on code share flights.
The next person I spoke to was no better then the first and said my booking said one bag each. Yeah but what weights and what about my gold status? No answer, said maybe best to check with Emirates. I checked the Emirates website and it has a good blurb, but from their point of view. Basically it says
So EK flight number on QF metal=EK baggage allowance, so using the reverse logic it stands to reason that QF flight number on EK metal should=QF allowance. Right?
The last person I spoke to said that the Emirates allowances apply to all the sectors because it is the higher of the two (half true it is higher for my wife, but lower for me), which would mean my wife is allowed 30kg total and I am allowed 46kg, but on all flights? Hmm not so sure about this answer either, because I booked before 26th Feb.
So the question is what is the answer? Last thing I want is for the wife to go on a shopping spree in London, for us to get to the airport expecting one allowance and having to pay excess, without anything to back us up.

If you are on a Qantas-operated flight (with a QF code), Qantas baggage allowances will apply. This includes QF flights redeemed using your Skywards Miles, and connecting Australian domestic flights. However, if you are on a codeshare flight (with an EK flight number, but operated by Qantas) then Emirates baggage allowances will apply. Learn more about Qantas baggage allowances at qantas.com.
