I am about to book flights flying late August / back early September Sydney to Rome in economy for myself and husband. I am thinking as I am only silver it is unlikely to get a successful upgrade on QF1 for the Syd - Dubai leg / QF2 Dubai - Sydney to business.
For the flight home I was thinking of flying emirates as it arrives late at night but my husband is keen for QF2 in case we can get upgraded.

Other than prayers - any tips?

Many thanks

I've had about 60% success rate on upgrade requests on QF EU flights. This is on all status levels and both Y>W and J>F. This covers the current flights via DXB and the old flights to SIN and HKG.

Other then QF9 SIN-MEL (having connected from Asia), I haven't done any AU legs of the EU flights though.

I believe (suspect) QF9/10 give you better odds but someone here may be able to provide some facts regarding this.

You're chances of getting an upgrade will probably be better if you fly off-peak and mid-week (i.e. departures between Tuesday and Thursday). At the very least, you don't appear to be flying during school holidays etc. so that may help. QF9/10 via Melbourne may also be less full.

If you let us know the exact dates you're looking to fly, I'm sure someone would be able to look up the current flight loadings so you can choose a flight with the best upgrade odds. :)

Looking at flying out of Sydney - Rome on Saturday 27th August and back Rome - Sydney Thursday 8th September.

Thanks for the replies!

For the outbound, I recommend booking QF9 (MEL-DXB) departing on 28 August. This flight has by far the most vacant seats in business class at this point.

For the return, QF10 from DXB to MEL generally has more vacant seats in business than QF2 around those dates. QF10 departing DXB on 8 or 9 Sept is probably the best option. If you prefer QF2 direct to SYD, go for the 9 Sept departure.
