I understand that when you upgrade from Flex Y or Y+ to J with points that its only possible if theres a reward seats available, as they come from the same fare bucket (fair enough). I also understand VA release a limited number of J seats at 330 days out (or thereabouts) and they get snapped up as either rewards or points upgrades which are confirmed at the time of booking, unlike QF who do last minute.

So what happens with those unsold J seats at T-14 or T-7? Some airlines like EY, MH and NZ offer a bid system to sell them at a discount, while other airlines like CX and SQ release them as award seats?

What do VA do? I dont believe they do either option so presumably they are left with lots of empty long-haul J seats?

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

On some routes I think they release more 3d out. This certainly seems to be the case for lax-Brisbane where they consistently start popping up again 3d prior to the date of travel. Not sure for other routes
