Just have to ask this forum for advice, particularly as I have a propensity to do dumb things with my hard earned FF points...

Flying SYD-LAX on Thursday on QF11, in PE. Submitted for an upgrade, but I'm WELL short of points. Today, I considered buying the 45.5K points I need to ensure I have enough IFF the upgrade request is fulfilled in my favour.

45,500A$1,128.00
Of course it's crazy. On the flip side, I'm travelling again in May, QF1 to London, again booked in PE, so these additional points may come in handy then, for another attempted upgrade.

PS: I'm gold with QFF.

Dumb right? Let me have it...

PPS: Any way I get my seats changed to the front row of PE, currently showing as blocked in Expert Flyer (24D, E, F).

I'd probably look at buying wine from Epiqure instead... the points should credit quickly.

You say you're well short, but do you have the necessary 80%?

(d) the number of Points purchased must not exceed 20% of the number of Points required for that Reward, rounded up to the closest multiple of 500 Points;

And also, I'm not sure whether top-up points are technically allowed for upgrades. But I guess an "Upgrade Reward" is a "Reward", so maybe they are.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I've done dumb things - because I could justify it:p:D.

If you feel guilty afterwards then you'll know you shouldn't have done it and hopefully won't do it again in future. If you feel great after your experience and despite the lower bank balance then it's ok. There is a tipping point for everyone but it's very much an individual thing.

Is it possible to do a credit card sign up bonus??

OMG, thanks for pointing both this out! No I wouldn't have had the 80%. The next flight coming up to London, I should be able to fit that criteria, so I'll refrain today!

NZflygirl, I tried the CC bonus point route, but alas not in time. Hopefully, I get some free time during this trip to properly plan out my next FF chapter as shift away from VA to QF.

Don't forget you get will a swag of points for your first PE flight (plus the SG increase), which will reduce the points needed for your second PE flight upgrade plan.

Thank you for the tip BM. Never thought of that... I have been looking at accumulating a few last points for an upcoming redemption flight as I am a bit short and this might just save me from having to buy them. Rather have wine AND points :D

Does Qantas still offer the purchase of a Qantas lounge visit? My wife received email recently but that was for domestic flight. Are these invitation only?

Got back today and just wanted to share the multiple "your request was unsuccessful" text messages Qantas sent to me and partner, just to rub it in...reason: insufficient points...well, duh! haha

Upgrade request for QF1 this Friday is locked in and this time I'm flying solo and do have sufficient points, wishing for a different text message! :)
