What
W Seattle

Where
Located at 4th and Madison, the W Seattle is in excellent proximity to Pike St Market which is just a 15 mins’ walk away (and I’m a slow walker). And some nice boutiques located a block or 2 away from the hotel. Make sure you check out this delightful little French pastry and coffee place opposite the hotel. Nightlife and food in Capitol Hill are a bit further away but no more than a 5 mins’ cab ride.

WoW

The service and vibe at this hotel were simply fab, despite being warned prior of some of the negative implications a unionised workforce here has had on service. Staff were cross trained – the Welcome Desk folk also staffed the concierge desk and vice versa – so all were equipped to provide advice on the best spots in the city to hit, and answering my inane questions like ‘What would you do on your first day here if it’s your first time to Seattle?’. Kudos especially to Adam, who’s also W Insider at this property, and Leo for being so well-resourced and for all the hints and tips to make my time out more enjoyable, and also Leo for the 'little surprise' platter of fruits, lollies and other stuff. In general, everyone here had that ‘can do’ W attitude and always went that little bit further to enhance the guest experience.

The public areas were simply beautiful. The Living Room was littered with lots of comfy chairs and offered a warm and welcoming environment to chillax in. Hallways were dark and soothing and with cool blue lighting. Great range of music.

The bar at this W was rather busy every night with a decent crowd, and ridiculously friendly bartenders who were so keen to have me experience the best of Seattle’s nightlife that one of them took me out partying on his off-day. Dreadful mojitos notwithstanding (though redeemed by an improvised Millionaire’s Mojito when I’d complained – soda water replaced with sparkling wine – tasty!), the drinks list offered lots of choice and was reasonably priced.

Best of all, I got upgraded to a Wow Suite! That’s the 2nd biggest suite in the entire hotel next to the Extreme Wow Suite – WOW! Though I’m fairly sure this was the exception rather than the norm as the Wow Suite isn’t a Select Standard Suite for SPG upgrades and perhaps the hotel was just totally busy during my stay. Still, it’s nice that they put me up in the Wow Suite rather than sticking me in a standard room. Needless to say, the Wow Suite was pretty damn big and had lots of space for little old me; the bathroom was huge and could well be a room by itself. Lots of comfy furniture, and as usual the Wonderful Bed made it v difficult to get up in the morning.

Woe

Opened about 10 years ago, this property is definitely showing signs of ageing. The trouble with design hotels is they’re meant to constantly re-invent and re-design themselves in order to anticipate trends and keep themselves funky and fresh. My room was comfy and contemporary, however it was neither bold nor forward-looking.

The Welcome Desk also made a mistake in my bill when Fiji water, which was actually part of the 'surprise platter' Leo the concierge sent up to my room, was charged to my tab as they'd mistakenly thought I'd gotten it from the honour bar; but it was promptly rectified when I pointed out the error.
