Merapi Volcano in Central Java Indonesia has erupted again. Last eruption 2010. It’s the most active volcano of the 11? Volcanoes on the island

These volcanoes seem to produce a lot of volcanic ash unlike the Hawaiian ones.

No travel alerts from Jetstar relating to this as of today

Yes. Hawaiian volcanoes (also Galapagos .. anyone in mid ocean) are low in silica ( source rocks basalt composition) so lavas are runny. Volcanoes down the US West coast, the Indonesian island arc, Japan, Italy etc are high in silica ( source rocks sediment composition), so are stickier, tend to clog the vents and then go "bang", with lots of ash and smoke.

Darwin VAAC has 2 advisories at the moment. Merapi and Dukono

Merapi advisories all indicate no ash and no ash expected.
Dukono has ash up to FL060

Mt Agung on Bali has just started again this afternoon. Apparently some affect at DPS.

I have a transit through there on the weekend.

Additionally, a famous name from history also had a little hiccup earlier this week: Krakatau ejected ash 1Km into the air on Monday.

I wonder what Merapi is doing this week? Never a dull meletus moment in Indonesia.

You hope you do.

Do you have another routing planned?

I could go direct and avoid DPS. But where’s the fun in that?

(surreptitiously opens google flights...)

Has been an interesting couple of months for vulcanologists.Hawaii,Guatemala,Indonesia,Vanuatu plus 2 in the Galapagos at the moment.

DPS was an absolute zoo today with plenty of delayed aircraft ensuring people everywhere. But at least it was open and all those journeying from Australia for school holidays or to otherwise escape winter, could get in and start their trip.

And this is what Gunung Agung looked like:

Not much in the way of ash or smoke visible.

Ah it’s a problem. Transiting through Bali on the way to a wedding in September we cannot miss. I’d like to change right now. Have told MrP if it happens again I’m changing anyway. News tonight said they weren’t sure if DPS might close again soon.

And without meaning to hijack this thread totally, I think the Bromo crater about 200Km from Bali, and its active vent, is more interesting to look at:

From ground level it is very impressive. First from the main large caldera rim:

Then you head down into the caldera and have to walk across the Sea of Sand:

Then climb the active vent:

And when you get to the very narrow top, it sounds like a jet engine roar due to the escaping gasses:

And yes, in true Indonesian fashion, all that debris in the foreground of that last image is rubbish.
