VIRGIN AUSTRALIA has signalled it will launch international routes to Asia within the next year following an improvement in its fledgling long-haul operations.

After shedding loss-making routes and forming alliances with airlines such as Singapore Airlines and Etihad to stem losses, Virgin's chief executive, John Borghetti, said he was keen to expand flights to international destinations.

Good luck!

Hong Kong and KL perhaps could make sense to link up with Virgin Atlantic and Etihad. Singapore would not seem to make much sense given the SQ alliance and SQ's domination in and out of their hub.

Was bound to happen, this is exactly where the new A330s go to!

The 77W are too much for Asia
The A330 is perfect

I am thinking Japan/China....

So which routes are SQ keen to pull out of to focus on better things? Virgins duplicate seats can't be a coincidence.

Lay your bets....

With a fleet of 6 once all (current) orders are received I wouldnt expect anything to happen anytime soon...
That said if JB can acquire some slots on the line and facilitate a quick ramp up we may all be surprised :D

Japan/ China serving secondary airports makes the most sense, particularly given the C product and the aircraft's relatively small size

Still disagree and doubt the A330 will go OS in the short term, it's interesting that many of the Asian airlines are taking their A330s of the Australian route and replacing them with various 777 configs. Given the new VS push into India, I suspect that's a target for DJ.

A330s can fly to BOM and DEL
and they can fly to Shanghai, PEK and NRT :)

JB generally uses common sense and keeps things simple. Let's fly directly to places that have plenty of humans.

We have been through this......

The 77W's that Emirates and SQ use here are because they need the capacity for passengers/freight and they then continue to other long-haul destinations where the range/capacity is needed

The 77W's with VA will never be used for Asia flights, it doesn't stack up

I don't know what your background is but Markis10 actually has had experience in the Aviation industry so I suspect his opinion may be more well founded than you think!

NIce to agree with you on something :)

I'm a little amazed that Markis10 is still digging in even after JB has repeatedly said and/or hinted that he's sending the A330s to Asia at some point soon.

So they put beds in them for sub-4hr hops around Aus. Thats very generous if them, especially if they intended to use 777s all along which are already fitted with beds. Oh wait! They are going to use them in the longterm to where again? Not Asia because 777s are the aircraft for that region. So I'm puzzled by these apparently internationally configured A330s with nowhere to fly.

That's the thing, what he has said is Asia in on the radar for regional expansion and don't rule out more 777s, he has not said the A330s are heading to Asia specifically. We have been over this before, I just believe its a fallacy to say the A330s are ideal when all the airlines disagree with that statement with the 777 operations when they have a choice, in the last week more 777s were announced as subbing A330s to Asia.

What was the alternative, the abomination that is the new QF J config, still puzzled?

All airlines ?

So once again, since you never clearly answered it last time..

What airline/s uses a 77W to Australia that does NOT continue on to Europe/Middle East?

New A330's for Asia

We're both fairly confident and neither of us can really know. Shall we wager a bottle of wine or something on this?

Let's say by the end of next calendar year: I will bet that VA will fly their expanding fleet of A330s to Asia. You want to argue that they will order more/ redeploy their 777s to Asia?

Sounds good to me, and rather sporting :), you are on.

All airlines that have 777s and A330s in their fleet, and I am not ruling out a 772 option for DJ.
