I'm thinking about flying VA to LAX ex MEL. Does anyone know if they have international lounges in MEL and LAX?

Virgin Australia Business guests and Velocity Platinum and Gold Members (plus a guest of their choice) can access the Virgin America 'Loft' lounge.

There isn't a VA lounge in T2 Melbourne (International) but there is one in T3 (Domestic) but I think VA can have access to Air NZ's Koru I think. Correct me if I'm wrong

You are correct. VA use the air NZ Lounge in MEL (and SYD and BNE international FWIW).

The MEL lounge is pretty good by lounge standards and you do use the Air NZ lounge.

It's still clean and new feeling and not crowded in the mornings. While the food has gone downhill/cheaper/less/more limited it's still a nice enough experience, but the Qantas MEL International lounge would be better for food/drinks

The LAX lounge I haven't experienced personally since the refit, but will in a few days. It's a Virgin America/Virgin Australia lounge. It looks great, and the food/drinks/coughtails sound great and I'll give my feedback once I have been through it. However it is lacking showers which for me is a very big issue. For a flight leaving LAX in the evening and after a day of travel/driving/whatever a shower is the best thing to do just before boarding to make you relaxed for the flight.

That being said I'd prefer to fly Virgin over Qantas to/from the USA

Great planes/crew/service/IFE etc

LAX lounge is okay, better than the old one but still small and can get really busy. Lounge closes at 11.30pm which is a bummer when your 11 pm flight is delayed 3hrs! Planes are great, have flown both Bus and PE could not fault either. IFE really good.

How does the LAX lounge compare to the old Alaska lounge? (Is it the same one, just refit?)

Same lounge refit so size still an issue (shared with Virgin America). They have a staffed bar and drinks were flowing, did not have anything to eat but from what I saw nothing too exciting on that front. The staff were great but as mentioned earlier the 11.30pm closing time is a problem if your flight is delayed.
