Virgin Australia /Atlantic / Delta - Syd to LAX interline and baggage query

Just looking for some information and advice regarding my upcoming trip to America.

We are a family of 4 (2 Adults + 2 Kids) and flying on a Virgin Atlantic ticket Sydney to LAX (flight operated Virgin Australia). I was looking to book a new additional flight LAX to Las Vegas. I was considering booking a Delta Connection flight or Southwest Airlines.


Just wanted to check if I booked Delta fight Las Vegas will I able to check in the luggage from Sydney through and through to Las Vegas via LAX, understanding that I will need to clear customs at LAX and hand over my bags and will I need to pay luggage fee for the delta domestic flight? ( USD 30 per bag )

Alternatively, I can book Southwest as they offer 2 bags free per ticket, but we will need to change terminals and there is a 6-hour transit so will need wait 1-2 hours at LAX before we can check in.

Delta and Southwest tickets for LAX – Las Vegas are costing the same so just wondering if I booked Delta flight and the luggage is checked through and through Sydney to Las Vegas and if not charged for the baggage by delta will be the more convenient option than Southwest ticket option provided I dont need to pay for bags with Delta Airlines

ok, i think you'd have no issue with having luggage tagged all the way thru, but since you have no status ( which gives you luggage allowance on DL ) then i think you'd be pulled up by DL in LA and charged. And since the bookings would be separate, international allowance wouldnt apply to the LAS sector.

Thanks for the advise will book southwest to be safe, at least won’t pay a baggage fee
