Don't just sit idle and let the big banks cut your frequent flyer points on July 1: get your hands on a new American Express Velocity Platinum Card instead and keep your Velocity points flowing in!

It all starts with a whopping bonus of 100,000 Virgin Australia Velocity points when you apply by August 1 2017 and spend at least $1,500 on the card within the first 3 months.

On top of that, you'll also earn 2.5 Velocity points per dollar spent when booking Virgin Australia flights using the card and 1.5 Velocity points per dollar spent on almost all other purchases, including insurance charges and utility payments (telco, electricity, gas etc.), which previously earned fewer points, but as of today, earn more! On government charges such as payments to the ATO, you can also earn one Velocity point per $2 spent.

Best of all, all points are completely uncapped, so whether you spend a little or a lot every month, you'll earn points on everything you buy.

But it's not just points on offer with this card: every year AMEX also throws in a free return Virgin Australia domestic flight on selected routes (you can access a map via the application page to see where you could fly), and all of the following great features:

  • 2x Virgin Australia lounge visits each year prior to Virgin domestic flights
  • 2x Sydney Airport AMEX lounge visits each year prior to international flights with any airline
  • Free domestic and international travel insurance
  • Free additional cardholders on your AMEX account (such as for your children, partner or spouse)
  • Travel inconvenience insurance, refund protection, purchase protection, emergency card replacement, global card support, online fraud protection guarantee
  • Support for Apple Pay, Android Pay, Samsung Pay

There's a $375 annual fee to pay, but when you consider the value of the free flight you get, the bonus points, the lounge access, the travel insurance and more, this card is sure to more than pay for itself for anyone who travels even a couple of times a year!

So, what are you waiting for?

You can apply here today!

(When clicking the link, you'll first see the red Velocity Escape card, but you can access this great offer simply by clicking on the dark-coloured Velocity Platinum card either at the top right or the bottom left of the screen.)

I hope you've found this summary helpful and choose to apply via my link! I'm currently saving up my points for a holiday with my partner, so any bonus points are most gratefully received! :)

When applying via my referral link, you can earn 100,000 bonus Velocity points, while I'll earn 15,000 Velocity points if your application is approved, so much like an Uber referral, it's a win-win. While this is the same bonus amount as is available direct from AMEX, as noted in a number of other AMEX referral posts, applying for your card via a referral link may increase your chances of earning bonus points if you're not otherwise eligible, such as if you already have a different AMEX card direct from AMEX.

Hi all,

The revised AMEX Velocity Platinum Card now offers 1.5 Velocity Points per $ across most spend. 2.5 Velocity Points on Virgin Australia spend.

$375 Annual Fee & $65k+ Annual Income

This introductory offer is available to new American Express Card Members only.

100,000 Velocity Points upon signup using my referral link, and in return I get a 30,000 bonus if you use my referral link, which we definitely help towards my dream of redeeming for the Etihad First Class Apartment with my partner for our anniversary.

Main Features:

  • Receive 100,000 bonus Velocity Points when you apply directly through the website or via referral link, after spending $1500 on your new Card within the first 3 months.
  • Earn up to 2.5 Velocity Points per $1 spent on eligible purchases
  • Complimentary Virgin Australia return domestic flight after your first Card spend each year.
  • Earn 1.5 Velocity Points per $1 spent, except government bodies in Australia where you will earn 0.5 Velocity Points per $1 spent
  • Earn 1 additional Velocity Point per $1 spent with Virgin Australia
  • Complimentary Virgin Australia return domestic flight every year after your first Card spend each year
  • Enjoy 2 complimentary Virgin Australia lounge invitations each anniversary year at selected airports
  • 0% p.a. on balance transfers for the first 12 months — A one-off credit plan establishment fee of 1% applies.\

AMEX has made some major, and broadly quite positive, changes to this much loved card today. They've also increased the signon bonus to a whopping 100k points!, until the 1st of August 2017. Instead of the previous tiered points system, this card now earns a flat 1.5 Velocity Points per $ spent on most things (exceptions below) - which is a pretty descent earn rate.

So who would this card be good for? With today's changes, this card would now suite a broader range of people, especially those who:
  • Want to cash in on the sign-on bonus of 100,000 Velocity Points - I value Velocity points at 2.0c+/pt - so this alone, to me, is worth $2000+! For an annual fee of $375, I think WOW sums up this deal pretty well! Can I apply for five of these please? If you were going to buy Virgin / Singapore Airlines or Etihad Business or First class ticket and use these bonus point instead, you could easily double that, $4000+ value for a $375 outlay!
  • Virgin / Velocity flyers that want a good value premium card with some quality perks (eg lounge passes)!
  • Want to earn a flat 1.5 Velocity Points per $ they spend
Apart from the massive 100k point sign-on bonus, the best points (bad pun intended!) of this card are:
  • The free return VA flight each year - that alone easily pays for the annual fee - destinations list here - value $400+ to me
  • Two VA lounge passes each year - value to me around $65+ (some may value them more, others less)
  • Two entries to the very nice SYD AMEX lounge (I highly recommend it!) - value to me around $80+ (some would value this more highly for sure!)
  • Domestic and international travel insurance - I wouldn't want to put a value on this - it depends so much on your travel patterns
  • Access to AMEX small shop and statement credit offers - last year I saved well in excess of $1500+ between AMEX small shop and statement credit offers - and I was barely even trying. AFF has a really good thread covering these offers here: AMEX Statement Credits
The points earn structure of this card is now really well suited to everyday spenders as well as those that fly Virgin. The new points earn structure on this card is a follows:
  • 1.5 points per $1 spent everywhere except government bodies
  • 2.5 points per $1 spent on Virgin Australia Spend
  • 0.5 points per $1 on govt charges and the ATO
  • Uncapped earn
In summary, last year when AMEX offered a sign-on bonus of 100k Velocity Points for this card, I found it impossible to resit such a good deal! For an annual fee of $375 the 100k points is amazing value!. If you are thinking of applying for this card, keep in mind that bonus point offers this big don't come around everyday for this card! When you take into account the free return flight on offer, it is really 100,000k VA points for nothing (or better). Don't forget to qualify for 100k bonus points you need to spend $1500 on the card within the first three months. You must apply before the 1st of August 2017 to qualify for this awesome offer!

With the upcoming changes to credit card interchange fees in Australia, imposed by the Reserve Bank, credit card issuers have been drastically downgrading the number of points we earn on our credit cards. The major banks have all downgraded their cards in recent weeks. At 1.5 Velocity pts per $ spent this card is now the highest direct Velocity point earning consumer credit card that I am aware of!

For anyone kind enough to use my Referral Link - you will have my heart felt appreciation - I'll certainly be putting any referrals (which is currently a 30k point bonus to the referrer - me if you use my link) to good use!

PS - With all the positives of this card, I don't want to throw wet blanked on the party, but I do want to stress that whilst applying for great credit card offers, like this one, can be amazing value (sure is in this case) - it isn't for everyone. Please only apply for credit you can afford! No sign-on bonus, however lucrative, is worth a lifetime of debt and all the stress that entails!

  • Earn 0.5 Points per $1 spent on utilities, telecommunications companies, non American Express provided insurance and government bodies.
The card now gives 1.5 Velocity points per $1 on utility, telecommunication and insurance charges. 0.5/$1 is now only for government bodies: for new card holders at least. ;)

This is a good card to the have in the wallet. Looks like the changes to the earn rates have made it a better card for most users.

Earn rates are now 2.5 velocity points per $ for spend with Virgin Australia, 1.5 velocity points per $ general spend and 0.5 velocity points per $ on spend with govt bodies. The points earned on this card also remains uncapped!

On top of that 100,000 bonus velocity points are on offer after $1,500 spend within 3 months. In addition, points can be transferred to Krisflyer at rate of 1.35 velocity pts to 1 krisflyer pt.

The pain of the $375 annual fee is cancelled out with the annual free Virgin flight (available routes) and 2 lounge passes.

Here's the referral link - would be grateful for anybody being so kind as to use it! (as referrer I receive 30,000 velocity points)

Re: Velocity Platinum 100k

Absolutely echo everything that has been said, this is a fantastic card. I have managed to get a lot of use out of it and the new earn rates are an excellent enhancement.

I applied way back when using a referral link on this forum and would be eternally grateful if someone could pay it forward. My link is http://amex.com.au/refer/benjawsGmB

Apart from the amazing 100k sign on bonus you receive after spending $1,500 in the first 3 months, the main features of the card are:

  • Complimentary Virgin Australia return domestic flight after your first card spend each year (I have used this multiple times now and you can easily get the annual fee back on this feature alone)
  • Earn 2.5 Points per $1 spent on Virgin Australia.
  • Earn 1.5 Points per $1 spent on everything else, except those in the 0.5 points category.
  • Earn 0.5 Points per $1 spent on "government", including the Australian Taxation Office, Australia Post, and federal/state and local government bodies.
  • 2 complimentary Virgin Australia lounge invitations each anniversary year.
  • 2 complimentary visits to the American Express Lounge at Sydney International Airport.
  • Complimentary domestic and international travel insurance.

The sign on bonus can get you a return economy ticket from Sydney-Los Angeles or puts you well on the way to redeeming something a little more asperational like Singapore suites or Etihad apartments.
