Just completed a week on the Holland America line Veendam, an old ship built in 1966 it was updated in 2012. The crew were fantastic, the ship was clean, the food very good and the daily stops even better. We had a suite with a large port hole, very comfy king bed, 3 seater settee, 2 chairs and a desk and good sized bathroom on main deck, very quiet it was.
On board it was USD for additional dinning restaurants and tours, the latter expensive when one can get same or similar ashore for about two thirds the price, booze too, ridiculous like US$18+ for a beer and glass of wine, no drink package was offered.
The best part were the cities and quaint towns visited daily, while we really enjoyed Montreal for 3 days before departure, our favourites were Quebec city, Charlottetown, Halifax and beautiful Bar Harbour, however, Sydney town was deserted. On arrival in Boston it just happened to be the Seafood Festival and the huge Lobsters went down well!, in fact while there met two Aussies in a waterfront restaurant, found out they lived in Cairns about 15min drive from our abode!.
The crazy part is Qantas had the best ship fare so booked it through them.
