I'm hoping to book a trip from SYD to LHR soon so Virgin's email offering a chance to win 500,000 points was timely, as unlikely as actually winning it might be. I'd actually almost forgotten you could hook up with VS out of HKG for the trip to the UK. Anyway, I actually don't mind which way I get there if I'm sitting in at least PE. My goals are:

  1. PE for as much as possible (I'm aware VA to HKG means Y, YX or J are only choices, I could probably handle that)
  2. Maximum status credits
  3. Maximum points
  4. Lounge access (I'm VA Plat)
Now doing a little searching, I discovered I could actually route SYD-LAX-LHR, wow that would certainly max the points and SCs. Anyone with experience on this route or anyone with experience of VS generally? From what I gather, PE on VS isn't too bad whereas their current J doesn't look all that appealing.

My other option is SQ PE, of which I also don't have any experience (I'm familiar with SQ J, which I love but can't stretch for this one). Booking as a VA codeshare should get me the SCs but clearly I lose the Plat bonus on that one.

Many thanks to anyone willing to share opinions and experiences.

Are you sure you want to subject yourself to SYD-LAX-LHR? That sounds painful, both sectors plus the transit at LAX if arrival and departure times don't match up quite right (maybe they do align?)

subject yourself to SYD-LAX-LHR?

it's certainly a long-haul, no doubt about that. Delivers a lot of SCs though and I'm relying on just a few trips now to retain status.

The pricing for this return was quite attractive for the SC earn too. If you could break it up with a stoppover in LAX it would be a brilliant fare.
