I think this all works, but I want to hear someone else's thoughts (in case my timing is way off)...

My plan is to arrive at SYD (ex CBR) on VA661 at 5:55pm and transfer to QF2217 departing at 6:45. This should give me more than half an hour to get sorted out (50 mins if everything is on time)? Is this sufficient time assuming I do a web check-in before I leave CBR? Also will I need to leave the secure area? Do VA offer interline to QF yet? If not, I'm guessing that rules out checked bags (not that I was planning on having any) as there's probably insufficient time to get out, collect bags from VA, drop at QF, screening and board.

VA to QF will require a terminal change soon, that could be an issue.

Oops. I meant to put dates. This is Sunday coming (24 March). That's a fair point none the less... But hopefully QF are not that efficient.

If both flights are from T2 then no need to go back through security.

I do not think VA interline with QF and I am assuming that flights are on different tickets. So be careful as my VA flight today was ~45 minutes late and if I had onward connections I would have been in trouble.

IMHO,

I would not be swapping carriers with such a tight connection.

I would do it QF to QF or VA to VA but not VA to QF or vice versa.

Recipe for disaster

Seems a bit tight to me. The question would be delays for your VA aircraft during the day and getting to CBR on time.

Do VA interline with their main/only domestic competitor?

Did you need to ask that question?

First off, thank you all for taking the time to share your thoughts and wisdom. I'm now glad I asked.

Last I heard, there was no interline between QF and VA. I was not planning on taking checked bags anyway (just asking in case anyone knew different). I'm taking the answer to the checked bags question as "Fuhgettaboutit".

The only question remaining is is VA on-time performance with the E190s between CBR and SYD really that bad?

There is no interline baggage agreement between VA & QF nor an IATCI (inter-airline through checkin) for the issue of boarding passes, even if both flights are in the one pnr.

The only time QF interline to "VA" is if the "VA" flight is XR metal is SYD QF PER XR KGI. The fact that the PER/KGI was sold as a VA codeshare flight didn't matter it's based on what 'metal' the flight is so it's really a QF to XR interline where they have an agreement for baggage & one for IATCI.

In your case if you're able to swap the CBR/SYD to QF at least you'll be reaccommodated should you mis-connect but if your VA flight is late and you miss your QF flight you may have to buy a new ticket.

Well, I'm feeling young and dumb and gung-ho about it, so I guess I better work out fall-back accommodation for Sunday night. I'd really like to just book flights with Virgin all the way, but the CBR-SYD flights and SYD-ABX flights line up so badly it almost makes me think Virgin is trying to keep me off the E190s. I've picked that QF flight because it is literally the last flight to Albury for the day. You could be forgiven for thinking that they roll up the ABX Tarmac at night...

Just thought I'd offer an update. The upshot is got very, very lucky. CBR-SYD flight had a good run. It was the only one all afternoon (well, while I was there anyway) that left on time and even got into SYD a little earlier than expected (only a few minutes, nothing to spruke about, but better than being late). As soon as I was off (we had 1D & 1F, so first off the AC) I made a bee-line for the departures board and was pleasantly surprised to find QF SYD-ABX flight has been delayed. As it was we had enough time to make the connection, but the delay means we have enough time to get dinner. I just now wish I had bothered to organise that AFF Qantas Club membership.
