VIRGIN Australia and Canberra Airport have attempted to play down an incident this morning when passengers complained a plane "slammed" its brakes to avoid a collision with another plane landing.
The Sydney-bound plane, carrying 43 people, was taxiing on the runway about 7.45am when air traffic control ordered the pilot to stop because a light plane was landing on a cross runway.
Canberra resident Graham Matthews tweeted his shock shortly after the incident.
"That was scary, take off aborted, brakes slammed on," he said.
"Another plane landing on cross runway at Canberra."


Canberra Airport said the problem was the Virgin plane had been cleared for take-off but had taken too long to taxi.
A spokeswoman said claims of a "near miss" were inaccurate.
"Air Services Australia advise that it was a routine procedure," a spokeswoman said.


A Virgin spokesman said the captain would file a report as per normal for a flight but the incident was not considered serious enough to investigate.
"He was on the runway ready to take off he was at taxiing speed of 10 to 20km hour," the spokesman said.
The captain has told us he gradually braked as he had a significant distance to the cross runway."
The Virgin plane then proceeded to take off.

According to the article, the "incident" happened at 0745. The tweet from the guy mentioned above mentioned ABC News to get their attention. It was shown as being sent at 0804. So if he was on the plane as the article seems to suggest rather than listening to ATC from home, what was he doing with his phone on?

It just goes to show you how safe flying in this country really is, when there can be a news story about a rejected takeoff....
