The story of the Virgin Australia business is a Wrong fleet at the wrong time flying to the wrong places
I'm still under the impression that Pacific Blue, operating under Virgin Blue, between Australia and New Zealand was just starting to come into its own and probably offer some real competition while also turning a profit when Air New Zealand smartly and cheekily invested in them, and suggested they leave the market. Years later, with the threat gone, they have left them in an awful position. Reminds me of another airline. I know there's a lot more to it than that though.

The story of the Virgin Australia business is a Wrong fleet at the wrong time flying to the wrong places with the wrong things outsourced, too many management changes and restructures with an incompetent IT team...

They are fortunate that Qantas are also incompetent in some areas ....

I am no expert but going by comments on transport blogs, both IT setups are deficient. Quite amazing for businesses that rely on online sales as much as airlines.

I also find it questionable on if B777’s could be sold/transitioned to Delta and VA exits this route which means it could become DL flights with daily flights between BNE, SYD, MEL and LAX. Another option could be that the flights remain VA but staff outsourced / employed in the USA (if it’s cheaper).

Delta has a very small fleet of 777s, mostly of the older 200ER and the 200LR types. Introducing a small subfleet by acquiring/transferring VA's 77Ws wouldn't be cost-efficient for them. In addition, 4 of the 5 77Ws are owned outright by VA, and the 5th 77W is leased.

As for outsourcing to USA crews (whether if under the VA payroll or outsourced to a third party), I suspect they would be just as expensive as the East Coast crews, both QF and VA.
