Hi all - I made a booking on VA Y saver fares, and have now realised that I kinda need more SCs, and should've booked for the Flexi fare instead.

Has anyone had any experience changing a VA fare upwards (from saver to flexi) ? Im kinda hoping I will only be charged the fare difference and not any fare reissue, but I'm not too confident about that.

Any insight would be appreciated!

They'll charge a change fee (whatever that is – different for international/domestic), plus the fare difference. I believe this is so that you don't change to a Flexi and then cancel, as a way of getting around the lack of flexibility in saver tix.

But certainly give it a go! Call and ask. Status helps too.

You may be better off financially by keeping your Saver booking and if you have the time and energy putting the price difference to another Saver fare on another date. Depending on the route it may even save you some money.

That totally makes sense - thats mrsmart. I'll give them a call and try (and keep you guys posted)

Bolthead - yep makes sense. Going to find out what the out-of-pocket is first before deciding

so tl;dr - too expensive, decided to leave the booking as is.

for background, i booked my:
- outbound flight on a saver
- inbound flight was on a flexi.

i wanted to change my outbound flight to a flexi since i saw on the VA website yesterday that the price was only about $60 more expensive than my saver that i initially paid.

when i called - they said the change fee is $25 + calling fee of $60 + fare difference.

little did i know that since it is a return flight booking, the whole ticket will get rebooked (my inbound flight included, which i was happy to leave as is). since my inbound flexi has jumped by $300, I will have to pay for that change as well if i want to change my outbound flight - making it $25+$60+$60+$300.

decided against it, but the take away message for me is that - it might be better to book two one-way flights (and not return flights), if the pricing (one-way v return) is the same. happy to hear thoughts otherwise.

Thanks for the update! To be honest I thought it would be a lot more expensive to switch to Flexis.
