Having had plenty of The Business to and from Perth, I was looking forward to the expanded version over the Pacific. The Etihad lounge was good, and the champagne on boarding also.

Emile introduced himself, and offered to explain all the suite features. It was a full load in Business and also in Premium.

It took at least an hour to get a drink after wheels up, possibly longer. It was unclear why.

Lunch came with a similar menu to my last Perth flight in May, the Tasmanian Petuna Trout on sweet potato mash with garnishings was delicious – as was the cauliflower soup.

Emile kept the Petaluma 100 line Chardonnay flowing, and also offered me a taste of the Chenin Blanc, which I found too sweet. The (too small) cheese board rounded out the experience.

Later in the flight I visited the new bar, which is excellent. Same four people were there almost all night – I think row 7 would be troublesome in terms of noise.

The amenity kit was loaded with some nice products, and the PJ’s are a nice touch. The turn down service resulted in a very comfortable bed.

The seat is plush and nicely padded, comfortable even in the fully upright setting. I watched some movies from a pretty solid list.

Breakfast the next day was strange because I was served exactly last, and the scrambled eggs were almost cold as a result. It may be because I was working on my laptop at my table, but I would have preferred to be asked rather than having to look hungry to get a feed!

One cost cutting feature I really don’t like is the little flannel clothes have gone from the rest rooms, replaced with sandpaper rough paper towels. Boo that.

Overall this is the best business class between Australia and the USA still.
 
The problem with having an 'international' quality J menu on Coast to Coast is that it may be a bit of a let down when actually flying international J.

It is a problem I like to face however...
 
I'm going MEL-LAX in business (using Velocity points) on Thursday. I was going MEL-SYD on VA and then SYD-LAX on DL40, but space on VA23 opened up yesterday so I switched.

The trout looks great and if it's the same menu I think I'll be conflicted between that and the lamb.

How was the Etihad Lounge in the morning? I've been there but it was in the evening before an EY flight, and before their recent cost cutting. I am interested in whether I can plan to have breakfast there or should eat elsewhere first? And is the bar open for mimosas and the like?
 
FYI my last two flights on the route I was upgraded to PE for free at the airport, due to Y being oversold. Once I think half the PE cabin were op-ups. It's great to see the route full in J as well (according to the OP). I really want this route to stick around.

I wasn't too impressed by the EY buffet options for breakfast. Not bad, just not anything special. The bar was open but no consistent bartender, I found I had to chase someone down to order a drink. But they were happy to do it.

Went Brisbane Lax last week ( Sunday) and had the same menu. Wasn't a fan of the lamb cutlets with the baba ganoush, a bit shocked it didn't have a green vegetable served with it. Agree the Petaluma Chardonnay is good at altitude.
 
I'm Perth based and also keen to try going via MEL on my next trip to LAX. Also due to the reliability factor on the a330'S between PER - SYD, its a lot safer on PER - MEL. My trip to LAX last month the out bound PER - SYD was initially an A330 and got downgraded to a 737 after I had already upgraded to J from Y which is very annoying.

Not overly impressed with the Etihad lounge in SYD either. So I'm keen to check out the MEL one.

To be honest (I'm also in Perth) I wouldn't have any hopes on the a330 flying domestically much starting earlyish 2018.
 
I have done BNE <> LAX, SYD <> LAX and MEL <> LAX all in J and they are fantastic products. Never had a bad experience. Crew are always on top of their game, too.
 
I tried to book 2 x reward J BNE- LAX for June 2018 and could not get any. I booked yX and then 2 x reward J turned up for the exact date I wanted MEL -LAX. I Have not flown international out of MEL or international in the new business. Used my virgin high flyer $129 voucher for BNE -MEL the night before so overall a good result and looking forward to the experience.
