Using Comp upgrades on other star alliance airlines

Ok, so as a Gold Elite, you get 2 x comp upgrades per year to use.

In December, Mrs Simsy and I are flying to Istanbul on Turkish Airlines.

Does anyone know if I can use these comp upgrades (airnz) to upgrade on Turkish?

What fare bucket do you look for on NZ for the comp upgrades?

If it's "I" class which is used for USDM J class award travel it's near impossible to get.
