Urgent Cricket world cup SYD-MEL

Hi All,

Looking to get down to Melbourne to make the 2pm Cricket world Cup final. Based in Sydney i'm WP with Qantas.
SYD-MEL ideally leave sunday morning from SYD happy to go sat night if needbe.
return MEL-SYD need to arrive in sydney around 8:30am..

Struggling to find anything that is relatively affordable - happy to do price match with JQ if needbe.

Sun JQ 07:35-09:00 $108 with price beat with 06:45 am TT flight (there's a similar deal for about $50 more leaving 2 hours later if you want a sleep in)

Mon JQ 06:00-07:35 $109

$217 for a SYD-MEL return booked 5 days out is pretty good value if you ask me.

These options are better for VA than QF though.

I have looked at points - nothing available with QF and they cant open up any availability either.

Yes there's nothing cheap SYD-MEL unless you are willing to miss the start of the match

How long does an ODI match go for? Or, if you cut out the end part with the trophies etc.?

For going down, I can find the following on the award engine on QF:

SUN29MAR JQ0038 dep SYD 0905 arr MEL 1035 cls J (Star Class, departs from SYD T1)

That will cost 12,800 points plus what not.

As mentioned, most other things are pretty much, terribly expensive, or not even a seat to go around (especially for the return). I haven't exhaustively checked everything yet, though.

An alternative is the XPT overnight trains. There are still seats in lowest Economy available going for $92 each way. You may not arrive in MEL or SYD having rested well after the 11 hour journey, but you will be at the game nonetheless.

There is also a QF award flight on the Sunday evening, direct to SYD, but it leaves at 1830 or thereabouts; likely too early. But as you can see the overnight train is precariously timed as well, so that's why I wanted to know how long match play at least would go for (of course, if the team you are barracking for is losing in the second dig, then it may just be a blessing in disguise anyway).

The JQ38 flight doesn't exist unfortunately having tried to book onto it it gives an error when getting to payment. It isn't listed on JQ's website and QF customer service confirmed it wasn't operating.

Interesting idea re: the train - I think I would like to stay for the duration of the match so that could run past the last flight / train out of melbourne.

Early JQ flight to LST $119 then MEL for $139 Sun AM.

Award available on QF795 CBR-MEL first-thing Sunday morning if you can make it to Canberra.

You could one-way on the overnight train - leave sydney saturday night 2030 arr Melbourne 730am. $91.

Has a decision been made?

Extra seats have been put on by Air NZ for the New Zealand fans wanting to watch the game. They don't flog them cheap, though.

Unsure if any of the domestics decided to offer similar.

Otherwise, it'll make good viewing on a good mate's TV at their place.
