I am traveling on the A380 syd to lax return next month with my 10 yr old and 14 yr old in business class. I have enough points to try for an upgrade into first class on one of the leg.

My questions are: is it worth it from a comfort factor?
Would you recommend the syd lax leg or the return journey as the return is night flight and longer?
Are the first class seats like pods where there is no interaction with people you are travelling bearing in mind my 10 year old would need some supervision.

All this of course is assuming the upgrade comes thru.
thanks

I would apply for the SYD-LAX upgrade due to pre-flight F Lounge, and on board dining. On a night flight back from LAX all you will want to do is sleep so not worth using the points for that unless you have enough to upgrade both ways.
Traveling with a 10 year old I would choose a J/ K pairing. These share the same aisle access. The suites aren't enclosed and being across the aisle from each other would be good.
Good luck with the request :)

Are the children going to appreciate first class ???? . Maybe I am a bit selfish but could those points which you would use on the kids be put to a better use. I am sure the kids would enjoy J class and not really get the full benefit of F. Be a little selfish and use those points at a later time for a treat for partner, spouse, parents, or close friend ( pm me if you need a friend LOL). Any one who would appreciate it.
Please don't shoot me because of my thorts

Depending on how many points you have and what your future plans I too would be cautious about considering upgrading a 10/14 year old to F. If you have lots of points then do it - if you only have "enough" points the I am not sure I would see the value. However if this is the only chance you think you will have to experience F then do it - I am pleased to be able to look back on my life and one of the things I have done is fly first class - which I would never have thought was possible for a middle management type like me.

Some here on AFF has reported an illness where their children would baulk at anything less than F (or J) for air travel once you have exposed them to travelling with style / class.

Consider yourself warned :D

Are you kidding me.....put the spoilt little brats down with the luggage. Don't expose them to anything which could affect the rest of their lives.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Thanks but I fear it is not illness that would make them baulk at anything less - it is genetics! They get it from their mother!

This would probably be a one off experience for them being in F on an A380. I only ever seem to use my points for upgrading flights - in fact we all have heaps of points so it wouldn't bleed our family dry.

Will put in for syd lax leg- I like the reasoning of enjoying the time rather than sleeping thru it.

Thank you for your responses and for the record my kids are spoilt but are far from brats.

In your circumstances I would think upgrading LAX-SYD to be a waste of points given the amount of sleep time, lack of degustation.

Normally I'd suggest upgrading SYD-LAX for that very same degustation menu, access to F Lounge prior to boarding and plenty of time to really enjoy the F experience.
With a 10 & 14 year old in tow I'd suggest hanging on to those 135,000 points as they'll be quite happy in J and probably, hopefully, not really appreciate the F experience.
Bit harder to keep an eye on them as well in F should you need to.

After you all fly to the USA you'll have more than enough points for a one-way F award just for yourself, btw

Thanks Princess Fiona I was worried about being in that "capsule" cut off from seeing my wife or my 1 year old but your good idea has made it easier to choose F over J class.

Please take this in the spirit it is meant (and I have 3 kids of my own) but I hope you are not on the same flight as me with a 1 year old in first .......

just for that I am likely to have a crying baby next to me :-(

Have a look at this thread:

most of the experiences are positive.

Thankfully my boy cries very little except when he is sick or overtired albeit I haven't taken him on any flights yet so my main concern is pressure equalisation with his ears.

Kefci don't they provide ear plugs in the F amenity kit otherwise it might be time to turn up the volume on those noise cancelling headphones of yours. :)

This might sound selfish, but maybe just upgrade yourself on the way over? You could get the best of both worlds - experience F and not waste points on something your kids won't be able to make the most of. I mean, how many QF FAs are going to serve a 14 yo Taittinger?
Just get the older one to look after the younger one and enjoy the flight! :D

Just sayin'...

good point, as my kids would say......god will smite you for thar comment..... LOL

on the serious note......main reason I try to upgrade to F is to get some uninterrupted sleep (something that can't be had at home)

Are the upgrades coming through exactly at T-48 for WP and T-24 for SG and PS?

see the other thread "international upgrades - improved experience"

seem to be coming though at T-24

i am hoping earlier, because if no upgrade comes through I will change from QF11 to QF107 in bid to get to JFK a few hours earlier
