Upgrade Gold -> Platinum for free?

Hi all,

I've got my home loan with NAB and as part of the package the Gold Amex/MC card combo is included fee free (for the first year). Has anyone had any success in upgrading to platinum from the gold for a free year?

Just interested as I spend approx $3k per month. The NAB platinum card compares very favourably to other rewards cards. I am looking at the AMEX branded Qantas cards because they have some good bonus points promotion offers at the moment.

Thoughts/experiences?

I asked my loan manager during the signup process but it wasn't forthcoming (seems NAB have a procedure for delivering the Gold cards with the product which makes Platinum impossible). However I asked again a couple of months later & the cards were forthcoming with no change in annual fee.
